Giallo is Italian for the word yellow. See years ago a series of pulp style mystery novels were released with yellow covers. Giallo became a genre of film as well. Outside of Italy it refers to a film with mystery elements. It’s almost always presented in the form of a slasher or exploitation film. Heavy on nudity and violence the films operate differently than a standard American Slasher film. Generally you only see a pair of hands, almost always wearing black leather gloves murdering people. The murders are for the most part very graphic, and the killer is never revealed until the end of the film. These murders are usually solved by the work of a detective who is working with the local police department. Every once and a while you will find one with a supernatural element like Susperia, but those are few and far between. They also have very atmospheric and just plain downright creepy scores as well.
Made popular by directors like Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Sergio Martino, and Joe D’Amato, the genre of films soon became popular her in America as well. Directors such as Brian De Palma used many of those elements in his early film as well. Although the films contain very brutal kills they are still mysteries as heart. Horror fans began embracing them in the 80’s and continue to enjoy them to this day. Torso, Deep Red, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage are considered classics of the horror genre. Now even though the horror crowd loves them the casual suspense and mystery fan holds these films in high regard as well.
