Between Worlds Blu-ray Review

2/6/2019

Picture
“I smell like three days on the road!” Joe (Nicolas Cage) in Between Worlds.  It’s a fitting line as Cage looks like he has not bathed, or slept for that matting in quiet some time in this film. It’s not as insane as Mandy, and it lacks the action of Drive Angry, but Between Worlds is one weird film that is only made better by the over the top performance of the great Nicolas Cage.  He is the star of the film, and owns every scene he is in, which is basically all of them.

Between Worlds is the story of Joe, a trucker who is having a bell spell in his life.  He has recently lost his wife and daughter and one day while stopping at a truck stop bathroom encounters a guy chocking out a young woman.  He does what Nic Cage would do and beats they guy down and saves the woman’s life.  Sadly she’s not grateful as she wanted the guy to choke her out.  Turns out when she was a kid she almost died and was able to leave her earthly body and go to another plane.  She has a daughter who was in a motorcycle crash and is near death and wants to reach her on that astral plane.  She uses this power with Joe's help and is able to bring her daughter back from near death. Joe shakes up with her and everything is going well.

As he is Nicolas Cage he stars having sex with her all over the house, and as he is Nicolas cage her now very much alive daughter Billie stats putting the moves on him as well.  Unfortunately the reason she is coming on to her mom’s boyfriend is because on her way back to life she became possessed by Joe’s late wife.  Turns out she is not to please that he has moved on and his happy again. That doesn’t really bother Joe as he simply starts having sex with Billy as well. As hard as this sounds, it get even strangers as it goes along.

So this film is a weird one.  Not a bad one mind you, just weird. It’s disturbing for multiple reasons, mostly involving the bizzaro sex scenes with Cage, but also for the fact that is also kind of funny.  I’m not sure if it was supposed to be funny, but parts are so ridiculous, like having sex while holding a skinned animal while Animal Planet is on the television you have to laugh. Cage is very over the top as I stated buy a bit more subdued than he has been lately.  He’s clearly the right guy for this film.  Penelope Mitchell does a great job as Billie, having to play a young woman possessed by an older dead sexpot.  She’s a perfect partner for Cage in terms of stealing the film.  She’s set to be in the new Hellboy film, and she clearly has a bright future ahead of her.

Lionsgate has done a great job on the Blu-ray as the print looks and sound fantastic.  All the weirdness is bright and colorful as it practically leaps off the screen, which is weird enough as it is.  The sound is phenomenal.  You can hear the slightest pin drop in the background from your surround sound it is done so well.  It has one of the crispest scores I have heard in quiet sometime.

It’s not for everyone but if you enjoy something a little erotic, mixed with a whole lot of strange then check it out.  Or if you just like Cage buy it immediately as it’s definitely one to add to your collection.

Overall 3 out of 5 Stars!
