Jason Momoa is sure quickly becoming a household name after his great performance in Justice League. Granted he has been in some really good action films years prior, but he is really starting to catch on now. I'm willing to bet after Aquaman hits his stock will only increase. He's a very charismatic actor that does great in these action movies. His latest, Braven, is no exception.
Jason plays Joe Braven, a guy with a loving family whos father happens to suffer from the onset of dementia. He also owns a logging company. One night his dad Linden (Steven Lang) gets into a fight after he mistakes a mans girlfriend for his wife. He takes a good beating and Joe and his family have to go and get him from the hospital. Joe's wife suggests that they all head out for a nice bonding family trip to their cabin in the mountains.
While all this is happening one of Joe's workers, Weston, is transporting coke for a local drug dealer named Hallett. Hallett wants to get more of Joe's drivers to do this as the logs make a good cover for bags of cocaine. Weston doesn't want more people involved and the two begin arguing causing the truck to crash. They gather up the coke and decide to hide it, you guessed it, in Joe's cabin as its out in the middle of nowhere. Due to the crash the two are picked up by the local cops, and when it comes time to make a phone call Hallett calls his boss, a drug kingpin named Kassen to tell him that the coke is in a remote cabin.
When Joe and his family show up they find the drugs, as they were not hidden good at all. Joe wants to call the cops but as he's in the middle of nowhere he has no cell phone signal. That's not good as now there are a group of merc's outside who want those drugs.
What follows is pretty action packed as Joe and his dad must battle it out with these armed men. Joe with his bow and arrow and fists, and his father with a shot gun. Gunfights, motorcycle chases, hand to hand combat this has everything.
Filmed in the woods it offers an excellent backdrop to create and build tension. The film moves at an excellent pace as to not slow down. Momoa does a great job and is believable in the role. Flexing not only his action chops but providing a great action job as well. In fact the entire cast does a great job.
With great action scenes, tension, and a very ominous yet gorgeous backdrop of the mountains Braven is a great film to check out.
Overall 3 out of 5 Stars!
