In The Mouth of Madness Blu-ray Review

7/16/2018

Picture
In 1994 John Carpenter made the last film in his Apocalypse Trilogy which consisted of past films, The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and concluding with In The Mouth of Madness. Out of the three I must say Mouth of Madness is by far the most intense and that is really saying something as the other two films, The Thing in particular, are considered classics.

It's the story of John Trent, an insurance investigator who is hired to find a missing horror writer named Sutter Cane who still holds the manuscript for his latest novel the company needs to publish. Linda Styles, Canes editor is tasked with helping John find Cane.

It turns out that Cane's books have a history of causing memory loss, paranoia, and violent  tendencies that include murder after certain readers finish his books. This doesn't bother John as he figures it's all a big hoax to sell more books. They travel to a small town called Hobbs End which is the setting for Cane's novels. They do eventually find him and he gives Linda his manuscript entitled "In The Mouth of Madness"

When the book is opened the town, which is supernatural in nature to begin with opens a dimension of monsters and causes all the people in the town to go insane.

With a nice hand full of twists and turns, and a great John Carpenter ending this is one of the best horror films of the 90s. From it's acting to haunting score the film is an edge of your seat nail biter with plenty of gore and violence to satisfy any hard core horror fan.

Sadly the film was not a success at the box office, it covered it's modest budget but made little profit. It's still considered one of Carpenters great works and over time developed a large following. It's Lovecraft style story mixed with the story telling of John Carpenter is truly a must see film.

Fans can rejoyce as Scream Factory has done an amazing job of this Collectors Edition Blu-ray. The transfer is one of their best yet, and the newly commissioned art work on the cover is simply gorgeous. Not to just give you an amazing transfer they have loaded the disc with special features as well.
