The following Blu-ray was provided to me by Warner Brothers for review. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
I won't lie, I love Melissa McCarthy. I think she is the funniest person in Hollywood, man or woman. I have never not enjoyed her in a film. I didn't like Bridesmaids but her parts were hilarious. And to be honest I actually liked the Ghostbusters reboot. Essentially if she makes a movie I see it.
Life of the Party is a pretty standard comedy. Most will think it's a rip off of Back to School, but it's not. McCarthy plays Deanna Miles, she and her husband Dan are dropping their daughter Maddie off at college in the start of the film. After they say their good buys Dan tells her he's leaving her, and selling the house because it's all under his name.
Deanna goes to stay with her parents who tell her how they never liked how she dropped out of college to raise Maddie at Dan's insistence. Tired and angry Deanna goes to her daughter's sorority and tells her what's going on and to let her know she has just enrolled in the same college to finish her degree in archeology.
Deanna becomes friends with the members of her daughter's sorority and after a quick makeover begins partying with them. She even starts sleeping with a kid from a nearby frat house who falls in love with her right away. This leads to a dinner scene midway through which is one of the funniest exchanges I've seen in a while.
The film is a laugh riot with a lot of heart. In fact if your a fan of 80s comedies this is right up your alley. McCarthy is a genious at physical and raunchy comedy. I wondered if it would still work after she lost so much weight and it still is. Her delivery and charm hold everything in place. The friendship she forms with the other girls who like and look up to her is funny but also pretty touching at times when you see the lengths they go to help her fit in and comfort her regarding her divorce.
Warner Brothers has done a great job on the Blu-ray transfer. The film looks and sounds great. It's got a pretty good soundtrack that fits each scene and it's nice hearing it blast out of my speakers. The Blu-ray contains bonus features as well. One of which is a hilarious gag reel.
Once again if your a fan of McCarthy you'll love this. Even if she's not your cup of tea you should still give this a watch. It's PG-13 so it's a pretty good film to watch with your family. I highly recommend picking it up.
Overall 4 out of 5 Stars!
