"Don't Fall Asleep" is the tagline for the new horror film The Sandman, which was produced by Stan Lee for the Syfy Channel. Now when the sell point of a film is "Produced by Stan Lee" you know there may not be a ton to brag about.
Sandman follows a young girl named Madison, who's father is killed in the beginning by a swirling blob of evil sand. Because of this she has to go and live with her aunt Claire.
But Madison has a lot of issues, Carrie like issues as she can controll and move things with her mind. She is also responsible for The Sandman as when she gets upset and crazed he comes to life and kills people. He has no folk lore or for that matter backstory, a whirling blow of sand and rock just shows up and kills something around it.
Of course no cop is going to beleive that an evil lop of sand is responsible for murder one so it's up to Claire to help Madison defeat the evil Sandman.
The film actually features good performances by everyone involved, however it's to loaded with stereotypical characters that you see in every horror movie. The loving relative, the traumatized child, the evil boyfriend, the nosey neighbor, and so on.
I will say that the design of the Sandman is pretty cool. A combination of cg and practical effects to create whirling sand an rocks and a face is really very cool. It reminds me of something Kolchak would have battled back in the day.
Made for Syfy so don't expect tons of gore or nudity The Sandman is a decent way to kill 90min. If your a fan of these types of films it's worth watching.
