Thanos was born on Saturns moon Titan as the son of A'Lars, and Sui-San and his brother is Eros also known as Starfox. Thanos carries the Deviants gene, and as such, shares the physical appearance of the Eternals' cousin race. At birth, his mother was shocked by his appearance and attempted to kill him, due to believing that her son would annihilate all life in the universe, but was stopped by A'Lars, Thanos' father. During his school years, Thanos was a pacifist and would only play with his brother and pets. By adolescence, Thanos had become fascinated with nihlism and death, worshipping and eventually falling in love with the physical embodiment of death, Mistress Death As an adult, Thanos augmented his physical strength and powers through his superior scientific knowledge. He also attempted to create a new life for himself by siring many children as well as becoming a pirate. He finds no fulfillment in either until he is visited again by Mistress Death, for whom he murders his offspring and his pirate captain
I’ve never liked Thanos. I find him comical at best and a Darkseid rip-off. Think I’m kidding? Darkseid came out 2yrs before Thanos. That, and the fact Thanos just looks like a giant Muppet does not help either. I mean the two best lines in Infinity War come from Star Lord when he tells Thanos he looks like the Grimace, and when he tells him his chin looks like a giant nut-sack. Now personal feelings aside this review is not based on my opinion of Thanos but on the statue itself, so let’s take a look.
Let’s look right at his giant nut-sack chin. It’s crafted perfectly. You can see all the lines and indents sculpted into it. The lines are shaded as such to give it a shadow look thus creating a touch of realism. The nose and cheek bones are formed down and the eyebrows are slightly slanted down to give him a menacing look. His eyes are well painted and almost feel like he’s looking at you. The lines on the forehead give it the sense that he is contemplating his next evil move. His head is crafted to give his head a dome look. The shading sculpting and painting give him a great look. He looks more like his comic book counterpart as opposed to the film version.
This front shot I have purposely aimed to the side as to focus on his Infinity Gauntlet. This part is simply amazing. Pictures don’t do it justice. It’s perfectly sculpted and shaded to give it the battle worn look as well as show off all the markings and lines of the glove. Right in plain view are the infinity stones. All of them in perfect order and painted exactly as shown in comics and film. I love how the glove is made bigger and his hand is turned out as he holds it. It makes it, as it should be, the focal point of the piece. It’s made much bigger than the hand and as it is raised up it looks amazing. The rest of the body is accurate. The dark almost grey blue uniform with the golden makes look great. It’s painted and shaded to give it a spandex almost metallic look. You can see all the muscles under the costume and as it’s made larger than most of the Marvel statues it truly has a larger than life feel.
The back shows off the gold shoulder pads really well. Painted in almost a gold with copper colored undertone they are slightly raised to give it a look of armor. You can see from the back how the outfit is don’t in different colors. Light black, bluish grey. All of these tones make this stand out. By using paints and shades of all different colors it helps to make each and everything stand out. It gives it a layered look to add to the realism.
The base is simple it’s like some space rumble on a rock. Nothing fancy. You can also get a good shot of Thanos’s boots which are shaded to give them a freshly shined look. The debris on the base looks great and like I said it’s small but effective. Normally small bases make me complain but as Thanos is supposed to be so big this adds to that fact. It puts all the attention on Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet.
I do like this piece except for the fact Thanos is grey. Now don’t get me wrong he’s been grey in the comics. He’s purple in movie, but sometimes looks pink. Now Thanos can’t change color but many people render him different. I like the purple look as it separates him from Darkseid. It’s a nice piece and will look great with the rest of your infinity war statues. I just would have liked it better if it was purple.
Overall 3.5 out of 5 Stars
