"The thrill of entertaining" Duke Cornell's response when asked why he puts his body through hell traveling from City to City to wrestle.
Tomorrow night in Omaha Nebraska a crowd of wrestling fans will pack the Side Room in The Ralston Arena to witness the Anniversary show Of Magnum Pro Wrestling, a local company who draws good crowds and has been around over 7 years. There main event will feature local stars TJ Benson, Jayden Drago, JC Slater, and Heavyweight Title Holder Duke Cornell in a 4 way dance for the championship.
Cornell is the champ, put he plays The heel, or bad guy if you will in the match. Once a baby face (good guy) Duke was part of Guns and Beer a popular stable of midwest wrestlers. But Duke decided to turn his back on the fans an Aline himself with the heel faction of NOW This Is Wrestling. He jumped JC Slater and stoled his title. Not content with just doing that he also stole not only Slater's girlfriend but the engagement ring he planned on giving her as well.
Not all snakes crawl is Dukes motto, it's even on his merchandise which my son wears to the shows with pride. Now why would a small child root for such an evil rule-breaker? Well it's because I told him a little more about Duke then he likes to let on.
Duke has been wrestling for close to 9 years. He's a family man with a wife and children. On the weekends he leaves his 9-5 job and travels across the Midwest area. He works shows in IL, SD, MN, all over. He's talented enough to go between being a good guy or bad guy depending on the company, and at the end of the weekend he comes back to Nebraska and heads back to his day job only to do it again the next week.
This is the life of the average Indy worker, but Duke is above average. I met him in Twitter where I plug my various articles and videos and we hit it off. He did an interview for my site to protmote an upcoming Magnum show, that went over very well. Very soft spoken and approachable he's very different from his character. And it's because of the difference I chose to write about him.
Every other day we hear about John Cena meeting a make a wish kid, which is great. Sadly no one covered here locally what Duke recently did. So I decided to change that.
One of Dukes trademarks is his long black hair. So when I saw he chopped it all off I asked why. He said he cut it off to donate it to be used for wigs for sick children who have lost there hair. He didn't brag about it, he didn't promote it, he just did it to be a good man.
So now with short hair the man who wears a gimmick eye patch will continue to drive from town to town away from his family on the weekends. I asked him why he chooses to do it, and he replied "Too much desire to succeed."
This Saturday night my family will be part of the crowd cheering on the Magnum Pro Wrestlers, and even though Duke will be one of the most hated men in the building he will still manage to sneak in a hand slap to my son and entertain the crowd. And mostly likely he will do it somewhere else the next day.
By the way if your ever in Omaha Nebraska be sure to go to Ted and Wally's Ice Cream, they have a flavor named after Duke Cornell.
