“You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.”. ― Bruce Lee.
Bruce Lee, was a Hong Kong-American actor, director, martial artist, martial arts instructor, and philosopher. He was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts philosophy drawing from different combat disciplines that is often credited with paving the way for modern mixed martial arts. Lee is considered by commentators, critics, media, and other martial artists to be the most influential martial artist of all time and a pop culture icon of the 20th century, who bridged the gap between East and West. He is often credited with helping to change the way Asians were presented in American films. He is now brought to life by the fine folks at Diamond Select Toys.
Lets just hit the ground running and start off with the face. Its Bruce Lee. I love how he has that trademark slightly turned head with the eyebrows raised just a touch as if he’s ready to fight. The eyes are so well done they stare at you. It just looks like he is ready to start beating somebody’s ass. The cheekbones and lips are a dead ringer, the whole thing is a dead ringer. Even the indent under the lip is perfect. The expressionless, yet still hidden smile look on the lips is conveyed through the amazing shading on this. If you look closely you can see how the face and behind the neck vary in color, giving it an almost lighted look. Same is done around the sides of the nose. The hair is done in that trademark bowl style, but as its Diamond Select you can see its not simply painted but fully etched and shaded as well. Heck even the eyebrows are etched and shaded. This simply put is as real looking as it gets.
It doesn’t just stop at the face, the body is sculpted identically to Bruce as well. From the traps, to the biceps to the abs this is spot on just as he looked in life. The amount of detail that has gone in to creating the body shape is fantastic. As the pose is slightly twisted you can even seen the ribs coming through the skin. They form symmetrically to the abs which are spot on. They pop slightly out as they would on the human body. The painting is done so well and like the face parts are painted lighter than others to give the muscles a shadow look. You can see how the inside of the neck is painted lighter than the chest muscles below it. Bruce had no body fat and was shredded beyond belief, just like he is in this statue. The pants are really cool as they are a black and grey color, to give it a wrinkled worn out look, but the shadowing is all done in blue which really makes it pop out and give it more character
Bruce always talked about water and this side shot shows how it was incorporated. Flowing up from his arm and blending into the air is a great wave. You can see, before I forget to point out, the detail in the forearms, biceps, and triceps in the arm, which is shaded like the rest to give it depth. Even the hands are fantastic, as each finger is sculpted and painted individually. The water looks great. It flows straight up into the air painted in various shades of blue and white. It looks like real water with the waves and splashes coming around the forearm and hand. You can see the drops even by the finger tips. Its very slick how the hand aimed down (this one) has the water going up where as the hand raised up has the water flowing down giving it a perfect circular motion of grace and beauty and adding a touch of class.
From the back you get a much better shot of the pants. Designed to look not only wrinkled and worn but bunched up on the bottom so you can see the white sock and the trademark slip on shoes. The blue lining in the pants is so cool to me, it really makes everything just stand out. You can see the back muscles forming that perfect “V” shape. From the shoulder muscles to the back muscles everything is sculpted to match the anatomy to the human body. Shaded for all the light drops to make everything more lifelike. The head tilt from the back looks really cool as well. You can even see how the water wraps around from, the back.
The base is actually quiet clever. Bruce Lee always preached balance and harmony which is what this base displays. It looks like a part of a sculpted lawn. From the green grass, which, and I hate to sound like a broken record is also sculpted and shaded. Surrounded by rocks and landscaping its right on the mark. Each rock is shaded and sculpted to look like they are laid out as opposed to just lumped in and molded. There are even birds on the ground not being disturbed by Bruce’s fighting stance. You can even see slight indents in the grass where we can only assume people have walked. You can also get a good look at the slip on shoes. Notice how they are also shaded a different color of black in spots to give it a worn out look. Then the rims are painted the born color of the sole. Throw in the white socks and you have the look down pat.
This is a must own for any collector, and fan of Bruce Lee. I have never seen a statue capture his look and aura they way this one does. It’s a great piece for the collection, and I cannot wait until they add more. Like Bruce Lee would say, this statue flows like water. Pick one up today.
