Absurd Blu-ray Review

9/25/2018

Picture
In 1981 Joe D'Amato, the famous horror/gore director from Italy created a little film called Absurd. It's a gory slasher film that was placed on The Video Nasty list in the 80's. The film was deemed so vile that in the UK it was banned for many years. It got an American VHS release during the home video horror boom of the mid 80's, and uncut copies of the tape are actually considered expensive and highly collectable.

Absurd is about a man named Mikos. He volunteered for a series of experiments being done by the local church. Much like Deadpool the results gave him a healing ability. And much like Deadpool he went insane. As he is nuts he becomes a deranged killer.

A priest from the church is chasing Mikos and in the beginning throws him on to some spike railings causing his guys to spill out. He's ok though as he comes back to life at the hospital and kills a nurse to escape. He eventually performs a home invasion stalking and murdering a family while the priest continues to track him.

Vile, and nasty is a good way to describe this one. Filled with burnings, beheadings, eye gouging, and throat slashings this film is a splatter fans dream. The practical effects are great and hold up to this day. After watching it I can honestly say I see why it made so many censor lists.

Well thanks to the good people at Severin you can now experience it uncut and on Blu-ray no less. A gorgeous 2k transfer, the film looks and sounds great. It hard to imagine it was made in 1981 as the picture is so stunning. It's also loaded with special features

Rosso Sangue: Alternate Italian cut (with optional English subtitles)
The Return of the Grim Reaper: Interview With Actor / Writer / Co-Producer Luigi Montefiore(George Eastman)
D’Amato on Video: Archive Interview With Director Aristide Massaccesi
A Biker (Uncredited): Interview With Michele Soavi

First 2500 copies includes Bonus CD Soundtrack
Reversible Wrap

This movie is a must own for horror fans. Every one who watched it back in the day need to buy this right away as it is the definitive edition. If you have never seen it and are a slasher fan it's definitely worth checking out. Just be warned it is very graphic in terms of the murders.

Overall 3 out of 5 Stars
