Ahh Blaxploitation, that what I'm talking about. Its well documented how much I enjoy those films, From Superfly, to Truck Turner, I love them all. One of the ones I am a huge fan of is Blacula, in fact that's my favorite movie trailer. Well Blacula was actually a pretty big money maker, so the good folks over at AIP decided they should cash in, and in 1973 they tried that with Blackenstein!
Blackenstein is the story of a Vietnam vet named Eddie Turner who had his arms and legs blown off by a landmine during the war. He lays in a hospital and is tormented by the janitor, a white bigot if I ever saw one. Well luckily for Eddie his girlfriend knows Dr Stein, a genetic researcher who claims he can use his new laser surgery to transplant new limbs back on Eddie.
To bad the good Dr has a crush on Eddies girlfriend and decides to mess up the DNA he injects into him during the procedure which causes him to turn into a Frankenstein type monster complete with giant afro. As he's turning into a monster he basically loses his speech, and decides to pass the time at night by murdering people.
Is this good? Uhhhhh......yea, it Blackenstein for God's sake. It awesome. Its not as heavily toned in racism like the other films of this era, this is basically a corn horror film. And for me it works really well.
Severin has just released the Blu-ray and it looks fantastic. Great transfer in both video and audio, and they even stacked it up with special features
Theatrical Release Version (78 Minutes) and Video Release Version (87 Minutes)
Overall a great pick up for any collector and a lot of fun in general.
Overall 3 out of 5 Stars!
