Designated Survivor Season 1 Review

8/25/2017

Picture

Designated Survivor was a show that pretty much everyone I knew would watch. It seemed like something I might have enjoyed, but by the time my interest was fully peaked it was half way into it's run. And if there is one thing you don't want to do, that's start a linear based show in the middle. Luckily I don't have to now as ABC Home Video has released the complete first season on DVD

The story starts out fairly basic at first. The President, and his entire cabinet are killed during the State of the Union Address by a terrorist attack. For political and public safety on member of the cabinet is always told to stay home, they are the Designated Survivor, the person who will assume the title of Presidents of the United States should the entire line be killed. That person in question is a lower level cabinet member Thomas Kirkman, played by Keifer Sutherland

Thomas is the former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who is now thrust into leading our country. As can be expected he has allies in the form of former colleague workers and friends but also enemy's as well.

The terrorist attack plays into the main plot focus as the story weaves itself from drama, to thriller, to conspiracy theory show. The cast is fantastic especially Sutherland and Kal Penn who plays the newly appointed Press Secretary and one of Tom's closest advisors. The only thing that makes it's a bit hard to see is the portrayal of Tom from Keifer Sutherland. Not that he's doing anything bad, he's actually very good, it's just seeing him play Jack Bower all these years on 24 it makes you see him in a different light. I for some reason keep expecting him to make Jack Bower descisions rather than vomit in a toilet because he's nervous.

I watched the first 5 episodes last night and really enjoyed them. I'll finish the others this weekend. If your a fan of the series you already probably have this on a pre-order. If you like me and had not seen it before it's time to head out and pick it up.

Overall 3 out of 5 Stars
