Doom Patrol Season 1 Blu-ray Review

9/30/2019

Picture
The following Blu-ray set was sent to me by Warner Brothers for review. Thoughts and opinions are my own.

The DC Streaming Service is a turning into a real thing of beauty. Titans was absolutely incredible. And now I have had the pleasure to watch Season One of Doom Patrol. I will be honest. I never cared about the Doom Patrol’s adventures in comic books. They were a very low rent group that didn’t hold my interest. So when DC announced they would be appearing in Titans (They were hilarious) let alone be getting their own show I, like most were very surprised by this news. But DC did the right thing. They made this a very funny show, often times a parody of the superhero genre in general. They cast Timothy Dalton and Brandon Fraser in which was pretty interesting casting, and everything just sort of clicked.

Doom Patrol is a group of misfits who live with Niles Caulder aka The Chief played by Timothy Dalton. He saved all of their respective live at one point or another but due to their conditions they live with him at his mansion.. There is Cliff Steele (Fraser) a former NASCAR driver who after being decapitated in a car accident had his brain implanted into a robot body by the chief. Larry Tranor (Matt Bomer) a test piolet who passed through negative energy and crashed his plane. Badly burned he’s bandaged like a mummy, he also has a negative energy being living inside him. Rita Farr (April Bowlby) a former Hollywood starlet who fell in a toxic pond and now can change her shape into a blob type substance. Unfortunately its hard for her to control as moments of stress cause it to act up. Rounding out the group is Jane (Diane Guerrero) a woman with 64 personalities, all with their own superpower. They are joined by Vic Stone aka Cyborg (Joivan Wade) from Teen Titans fame when The Chief goes missing.

Season one of course sets up each characters origin and how they came to live together while being narrated by Mr. Nobody, the villain of the series who can manipulate reality. Cyborg get the rest of the group to band together in the hops of stopping him and finding out what happened to the Chief. Along the way the group battles a cockroach, goes into another world inside a donkey that farts green gas, get sucked into trying to prevent the apocalypse, all while learning to be heroes and learn who they are as well.

It’s a weird show as you can see, but its also loaded with charm. The characters share such a special bond when it comes to being a family that is can be touching at times. It’s a story of outcasts who come together to unite against a greater evil. Its also loaded with laughs usually from Cliff, who is definitely the scene stealer in my opinion. Its not your typical superhero show that’s for sure, in fact its not a typical anything which is what makes it so fantastic. So good the HBO is going to start streaming it as well.

The effects and costumes are just phenomenal especially for a television show. And Warner Brothers has done a tremendous job on this Blu-ray release. Everything looks and sounds great. I can’t say it’s a comic come to life, as this doesn’t really look like your typical comic book show. This is just in a class by itself. You get all 15 episodes from season one and they all look fantastic. They also all have the word Patrol in the title

Pilot
Donkey Patrol
Puppet Patrol
Cult Patrol
Paw Patrol
Doom Patrol Patrol
Therapy Patrol
Danny Patrol
Jane Patrol
Hair Patrol
Frances Patrol
Cyborg Patrol
Flex Patrol
Penultimate Patrol
Ezekiel Patrol

Top to bottom this is a fantastic show that even non superhero fans will love. I cant compare it to anything else really as it truly is in a class all by itself. It’s a great time and a show that should not be missed. Pick one up today.

Overall 4 out of 5 Stars!
