Giallo Films, aka my archh nemesis. I'm always leery of watching them as there either really good or really boring. There's not a lot of middle ground. For those unaware of the genre a "Giallo" is style of primarily Italian thriller-horror which focuses on the mystery but had the added horror, and eroticism elements as well. The murders, or deaths in these films are usually very gory but the move at a much slower pace than say a "Slasher Film" The word Giallo mean yellow in Italian, which derives from the cheap mystery novels with yellow covers that were once popular in Italy.
The story revolves around Detective Johnny DiSalvo. He's investigating the murder of Angela Russo. She was a member at an elite private school. She was found wrapped in plastic and dumped in a nearby river, she was sexually assaulted as well. She belonged in a group with other girls known as "The Inseparables"
Turns out those girls are starting to receive death threats. All of the threats they receive as signed for by "Nemesis" One by one these girls start to have "accidents" so to speak. Yes by accidents I mean they are being murdered.
See it turns out these Catholic girls are not so religious and they have been going to insane orgies with a group of business men who pay them for participating. Could the killer be part of this group of businessmen? Well that's u to Detective DiSalvo to uncover for you.
This film moves at a very fast pace for a GIallo, in fat it runs a lean 85min. Let me tell you that is a plus in my book as some of those films, like the incredibly overrated Torso clock close to or at times over 2hrs. This is a good run time for these films to keep you from losing interest.
The gore scenes from the murders a good, and enough to please the bloodthirsty horror crowd. Figuring out the killer will definitely keep the mystery crowd happy, and the pacing will definitely keep the suspense and thriller folks pleased as well..
Fabio Testi, who stars as Gianni DiSalvo does in my opinion the best acting performance in any Giallo film I have ever seen. He is the most flawed yet likable character I have ever seen in a mystery. He not only steals every scene he steals the entire movie. His performance alone makes this film a winner.
As I said, these films are not my favorite, and believe me they are not for everyone, but this one is definitely a must watch, The transfer Scorpion Releasing did was amazing. It looks like it is a newly made film. Lots of man hours had to go into this transfer to clean it up from the original print. Its even got a nice commentary from Nathaniel Thompson, a Historian on these films.
Do yourself a favor and add this one to your collection.
