The following Blu-ray was provided to me by Warner Brothers for review. Thoughts and opinions are my own
"Have you tried rebooting" that's the advice given when a massive weather controlling system goes out. Ironically though that's about the only believable thing in Geostorm as that's pretty basic IT advice.
Geostorm was filmed back in 2014 but after horrible test screenings a massive amount of reshoots we're done. The film then sat on the can for a few years before finally being released. It's a convoluted mess of a natural disaster movie that the special effects, which are awsome, cannot save.
In 2019 the world has experienced a rash in natural disasters, the likes of which that have destroyed entire city's due in part to global warming. To combat these disasters the Us and other country's build "The Dutch Boy" it's a giant satellite based system that can stop Extreme weather systems. It was created by Jake Lawson (Gerard Butler) and it works. It works so well that Jake stops a giant typhoon that's about to level Shanghai. He's rewarded by being fired because he didn't get permission to use it.
I know what your thinking, this makes no sense, well it because it's all part of a national conspiracy. Jake is replaced by his brother, who happens to work for. We then fast forward a few years to when a frozen village in Afghanistan is found, and a tornado wrapped in fire hits Hong Kong. Thinking something could be wrong, and the fact all the data from the Dutch Boy is gone Jake Lawson is brought back in to investigate.
What follows is a conspiracy at a president level with massive storms intercut between scenes. To say the film makes no sense would be an understatement. Granted most conspiracy laden films have holes, but the plot holes in Geostorm are the size of Swiss Cheese. Every character overacts, and all logic is thrown out of the window.
I will say though, the special effects are spot on. If the film would have skipped the conspiracy story it would have been a much better experience. As a natural disaster film goes it would have worked without any real plot as the effects could have made up for all of it.
Warner Brothers has done a great job on the Blu-ray transfer. I will say it looks like a million dollars in terms of the disasters on screen. The audio and video are Georgeous to say the least. There are also special features which are
Geostorm” Blu-ray Combo Pack contain the following special features:
· “Wreaking Havoc: Cutting edge visual effects, research and technology create the world of Geostorm.
· Search for Answers: Inspired by his daughter’s question of why can’t global warming be stopped, Director Dean Devlin retraces the creative journey that led to Geostorm.
· An International Event: A global cast opens up about the secrets behind Geostorm.
If your a fan of disaster films you may like this, like I said the effects are great, the plot just ruined it for me
Overall 2 out of 5 Stars
