Godzilla King of the Monsters Blu-ray Review

8/19/2019

Picture
The following Blu-ray was provided to me by Warner Brothers for Review. Thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lets start off by saying I am a big Godzilla fan. Cartoon, comics, movies, toys, you name it. Sure I will always prefer the guy in the rubber costume as that’s what I grew up with, but I’m no CGI snob. I loved Kong Skull Island more than I thought possible. But the 2014 Godzilla film, the big huge US release. I thought that stunk. You hardly saw Godzilla, and I sure as hell don’t care about the people in these films. In fact, the less humans the better I want monsters to fight. Nothing more nothing less. So I will say right off the bat Godzilla King of the Monsters gave me exactly what I wanted and more.

Godzilla King of the Monsters takes place 5 years after the last Godzilla film. Monarch is still watching “Titans” and in the beginning we see the birth of Mothra at one of the Monarch facilities. Mothra is freaked out upon being born but is clamed down by Dr Russell’s Orca device. It allows humans to attract, and either calm, or enrage these monsters. Unfortunately a terrorist group breaks in and steals the device and takes Dr Russell and her daughter hostage. During the commotion Mothra flies off. The plan this group has is to awaken the Titans so they will be able to heal the planet from all the pollution we have caused no matter the cost of human life.

They plan on accomplishing this by raising up a frozen Titan codenamed “Monster Zero”. A three headed dragon frozen in the Antarctic in a Monarch facility. Fan know him as King Ghidorah. They do manage to set off bombs causing him to emerge from his ice tomb, but Monarch has an idea of their own. They get Godzilla to help stop him. Godzilla appears and battles Ghidorah, ripping one of his heads off in the battle. Ghidorah manages to escape and also regenerate his head. The terrorist group does not stop there as the also travel to Mexico to awaken another Titan named Rhodan.

Rhodan bows down to King Ghidorah and Godzilla must no battle them both. Godzilla has help battling them with not only the forces of Monarch but with the help of Mothra as well. And let me tell you its amazing. Giant monsters battling it out. Mothra vs Rhodan, and Godzilla vs Ghidorah. It really is a giant monster slug fest. My only complaint, and its actually covered in the move as to why, is that the battles with Ghidorah always take place during a storm and in the dark. Don’t get me wrong you can see everything I would have just liked to see more of the Ghidorah design as its always been my favorite of the Godzilla bad guys

I cant say enough good things about Godzilla King of the Monsters. Its everything I wanted it to be and more. Giant monsters fight for over two hours. Sure there are people in in but there basically are fighting other people. Is the plot hard to follow? No, because I basically explained it in a few sentences. The acting is good and everyone involved does help move the story along at a fast pace. Vera Farmiga as Dr Emma Russell and Charles Dance as Alan Jonah, the leader of the terrorist organization and former MI-6 agent.

Warner Brothers has done a remarkable job with the Blu-ray as all the colors look amazing. The dark scenes are dark, but still bright enough to see without that horrible Blue tint that can happen in these films. The outside bright scenes with Rhodan look amazing. All of these creatures look fantastic to say the least. The audio is great. You can hear all of the battles coming through your surround sound putting you right in the middle of the action. It’s a great transfer that even comes with special features.

Overall this is what a monster movie should be and it really makes me look forward to King Kong vs Godzilla. Stick around during and after the credits but also just sit back and be amazed. This is a great film for everyone looking to just have a good fun time. You don’t even need to be a Godzilla fan to enjoy it.

Overall 4 out of 5 Stars!
