Ever read a Sweet Gwendoline comic strip? I assume you haven’t. It was a two page strip in the pages of Wink Magazine. It was for the most part a bondage comic. A very popular one that ran from 1947-1950. It was so popular it ended up being made into a film in 1984 entitled The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik-Yak. It was a erotic action picture of sorts that starred Tawny Kitaen in the title role. So there you have it erotic picture starring Tawny Kitaen. I mean do you need to hear anything else? No just buy it for that reason. But if for some reason you have questions let me give you a brief summary.
Gwendoline is a rich young girl who travels to China in search of a rare butterfly her missing scientist father was studying. She gets captured at the port by a local gang and sold to a whore house which is operating under the guise of a casino. Her traveling maid gets sold there as well. They end up being rescued by fortune hunter named Willard. He’s not really trying to save them he just goes to get money he’s owed and kill a few people in the process. Gwendoline pays to take the two to the Yik-Yak, a small area where the butterfly she is searching is believed to be, plus it’s the last place her father had been seen
When they arrive after a series of mishaps and adventures like being arrested and escaping, and being captured by cannibals. They are then taken prisoner by the women of Pikaho. It’s an underground S&M style world ruled by women. They live underground as a volcanic eruption sucked there land down during the 12th century. The eruption caused a virus to spread that killed off all the males in the area. They are ruled by a queen to governs under an archaic warrior rule, which means Gwendolyn must fight another S&M style warrior.
The film is essentially a capture an escape formula. Nothing more nothing less. I’m not saying that makes it bad, it’s just reparative. It’s a fun movie filled with lots of nudity. It was in the 80’s for God’s sake, but here in America it had to be cut quiet a bit. Down to 88minutes to be exact. Overseas it was released uncut which runs a full 106min. Now the good people at Severin have gotten their hands on the negative and are releasing this one on Blu-ray.
The film looks and sounds fantastic. Its another amazing transfer that really shows off how great a job Severin does with these films. The scenes are bright and colorful with never to much of a red or blue tint to it. It’s a great looking and sounding film, and Severin has once again managed to not only release this uncut the way it was meant to be seen, but they have included a nice amount of special features as well.
