Isn't It Romantic Blu-ray Review

5/29/2019

Picture
The following Blu-ray was provided to me by Warner Brothers for review.  Thoughts and opinions are my own.

I man be all man, but I wont lie, I enjoy a good romantic comedy now and again.  I mean sure they are all pretentious, and let face it the same thing.  Woman meets boy they fall in love, she has a rival, they break up, they fall in love again all while wacky things happen to them.  You seen one you seen em all.  Well another thing I love is Rebel Wilson.  I thinks she’s funny, pretty, talented, you name it.  I enjoy her films so when I heard she was making her version of a romantic comedy I was excited.  When I heard it was essentially a spoof of romantic comedies I became even more excited.

Isn’t It Romantic stars Wilson as Natalie  who we meet when she is still a little girl watching Pretty Woman with her mom. She’s loving the film but her alcoholic mom tells her that romantic comedies are not believable and that a girl like her will never have a fairy tale love life.  This essentially ruins her life and makes her cynical of romance.  She grows up and becomes an architect for a big NY firm.  Her life still isn’t going that great s her co-workers treat her like crap, she cant figure out her friend is in love with her, and to make matters worse she catches her assistant watching the Wedding Singer, which re-triggers her hatred for romantic comedies. She leaves the office and gets jumped by a mugger on the subway.  She takes no crap and beats the hell out of him.  However as she’s escaping she runs into a pole and gets knocked out.

She awakens in the hospital to find herself being cared for by an extremely attractive doctor who is constantly flirting with her. She gets checked out and low and behold everything is bright, and colorful, and according to Natalie smells much better as well.  Everything is sunshine, flowers, and song.  And yes, everyone looks perfect.  It doesn’t take Natalie to long to realizes she has been trapped in a romantic comedy.

The jokes are so clever in this film, yet so apparent at the same time.  Natalie’s co-worker has  become her romantic rival. Everything she wears is designer.  I love the bit where a sound blares every time Natalie tries to use a swear word, indicating her comedy is only PG-13. The sex jokes are hilarious, and I wont give3 any away as not to spoil, although one of the best ones is in the trailer.  Wilson is fantastic as always.  She makes every scene funnier just with her delivery alone.  Betty Gilpin as Whitney, her assistant / rival is a stand out, as is Liam Hemsworht as Blake. In the Romantic Comedy world he is hilarious more so than in the real world. The chemistry between all of them is great.

Warner Brothers has done a great job on the Blu-ray transfer.  The film looks amazing.  In fact the romantic comedy world looks almost like a cartoon come to life its so bright and colorful.  The audio is top notch, and its even got the usual assortment of extras.

Fans of as well as haters of romantic comedies will have a great time watching this as it manages to not only skewer the genre but embrace it at the same time.  It’s the best date night film to come out in years and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of comedy.

Overall 3.5 out of 5 Stars!
