The following Blu-ray was provided to me by Warner Brother for review. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
Superman has always had a long relationship with television. The original George Reeves show from the late 50's, Superboy in the 80's, Lois and Clark in the 90's, Smallville in to 2000's and various cartoons during this entire time. Now in 2018 we we're treated to not only a version of Superman on the CW Arrowverse shows but we also got an alternate version before his birth on the Sy-Fy Channel entitled Krypton.
Krypton takes place on the planet Krypton 200 years before it's destruction and the subsequent birth of Superman. It follows the House of El which are of course part of Kal El's (Superman) family. It's his grandparents to be more specific. It focus's on Seg-El Superman's grandfather.
Krypton is under the rule of a corrupt government who frames the House of El for treason and executes Seg-El's father. Most of this is due to the House of Zod. Yes the Zod from Superman 2 fame. Years after Seg and his family have been stripped of their wealth and power they are given a chance to get it back if Seg will marry into the Chancellor's family. As Seg is contemplating this he is visited by Adam Strange from our Earth's future. Adam explains to him of the future where Krypton is destroyed and Kal-El is sent to earth to become Superman.
Adam tells Seg he must find the Fortress of Solitude and use the research it holds to stop an impending attack from Braniac. Apparently in the future someone is trying alternate the timeline causing Superman to never be born.
The show features many great references for Superman, and comic book fans in general to enjoy. Seeing the grandparents of Superman and Zod is.a lot of fun. And we are also introduced to Braniac, The Phantom Zone, and Doomsday. The latter was a huge positive for me as I feel that the Doomsday introduced in Superman v Batman was a horrible version of the character. The story is heavy on science fiction and a lot less on superhero lore so that could upset some comic book readers.
The acting is very good Cameron Cuffe as Seg-El is fantastic in his leading role as is Shaun Sipos as Adam Strange, a character I'm glad to finally see on television. The effects are fantastic as well. The show is clearly made on a high production value and looks fantastic.
Warner Brothers has released the first season on Blu-ray and like I always say this is the way to binge watch. It looks fantastic and way better then if you were to simply stream it. Blu-ray is still the way to go and this set is great. It has special features and included all 10 episodes
Krypton: 2017 Comic-Con Panel
Krypton: Bringing the Home World to Life
A Lost Kingdom: Life on Krypton
House of El
The Rankless Initiative
The Word of Rao
House of Zod
The Phantom Zone
Although it does now contain Superman it's a great show for fans of the character to learn more about his heritage. If your a sci-fi fan it's definitely a must watch. Superhero fans may be a bit let down that it means more to the science fiction element but they should enjoy enough of the references to make it worth there watching. I definitely recommend picking it up
