Mega Time Squad Blu-ray Review

4/9/2019

Picture
Gangsters, dumb crooks, a botched robbery, and time travel.  What do you get when you mix all of these elements together?  You get one of the best Indy films I’ve seen in a long time.  Mega Time Squad. I can’t tell if it’s the over the top charm, or the simplistic charm that appealed to me the most, but this is a fantastic and well-paced film from start to finish.  It really is a lot of fun, and something you should check out.

Local crime boss Shelton is getting pretty sick of the local Triad gang moving into his territory. He decides to have one of his boys rob them as payback.  The boy in question is Johnny, a slow witted fellow to say the least.  But that’s not the only problem.  Johnny is also dating Shelton’s sister Kelly which complicates matters a bit.  Throw in the fact that Johnny’s partner and best friend wants to keep the money they steal and skip town and it’s a plan destined to go south. And go south they do, and fast.  The drop they intend to intercept and rob is happening at a local Triad Pawn Shop front. Triads Pawn Shop front.  Johnny sees a bracelet that he thinks Kelly would like so he decides to smash and grab it along with the cash. Johnny ends up being wanted by the cops, the triads he robbed, and Shelton’s goons for double crossing them.

He finds an escape however in the form of said charm bracelet.  See this bracelet acts as a time travel device of sorts.  It essentially will take you back a few moments to help you get out of whatever jam you may be in.  The catch is, when you go back it also spits out a clone of yourself.  And the other catch is that each clone becomes dumber and dumber as you go. And the final catch is that over using the bracelet will unleash an evil time demon  that will destroy the world Think Multiplicity meets Time Cop meets The Bank Job meets something with an evil demon.

The film is a blast from top to bottom.  It has a lean run time of about 85min. and it fly’s right by.  It’s one madcap chase after another with a gang of time clone Johnny’s working together to fix the jam there in.

Directed and written by Tim Van Dammen, this film really does fire on all cylinders.  Even though a good handful of the time travel scenarios and aspects make little to no sense it doesn’t matter as it’s just so much fun.  The chemistry of the cast is outstanding and all of the jokes hit.  The low budget only adds to the charm of this one.

Action, Sci-fi, and Comedy fans need to take note and ad this one to their collection.  It’s one of the most enjoyable films I’ve seen in years.  I highly recommend picking this one up right away.

Overall 4 out of 5 Stars!
