Punisher War Zone 4K Review

9/12/2018

Picture
Punisher War Zone, a favorite among comic fans for it's dark, yet over the top tone. It has come to 4K thanks to Lionsgate

Ray Stevens aka Low Rent Vinnie Jones steps in as the Punisher. The budget is much lower this time around.  However this film  does gets the origin and feel of the comics right.  Frank Castles family is murdered in Central park and he goes on a one man war against crime.  He wears a stupid looking turtle neck bullet proof vest with a skull spray painted on it. But weird costume asaide he does take out criminals the Punisher way.  By that I mean he kills them in very graphic over the top bloody way.  Along the way he takes a mobster and throws him into a glass crusher, thus mangling his face and turning him into Punisher comic villain, Jigsaw.  Jigsaw goes to the nut house and breaks out his bat shit crazy brother Loony Bin Jim and they go after the Punisher.  Theres some silly sub plot about Punisher protecting a little girl and her mom, but who cares.

It's not that I hate the film, in fact I have to admit it's quiet fun, but it's almost a step backwards as the films go. The Thomas Jane film was a big budget film, that unfortunately was not a Punisher film. But Jane was perfect in the role. This film is much smaller in budget so it takes a step back. Plus Looney Bin Jim was a throw away bad guy to say the least. Jigsaw was great though.

So most likely if you like The Punisher you have seen this and probably own the DVD and or Blu-ray. Is it worth the upgrade to 4K? Simply put yes.

The transfer is remarkable ever night shot is crisp and clear, not in that blue tint way, but in a true natural sense. The blood, of which there is a log flows on the screen in a bright crisp red. Everything looks fantastic. The sound is great as well as the bullets sound like there flying out of your television. This is 4K at its best.

A fun Punisher film for fans of the comics, and a great upgrade to add to your collection. I highly recommend picking this 4k up. It also contains the Blu-ray as well.

Overall 3 out of 5 Stars
