I'm not a Star Wars fan, but I can admit Han Solo is a cool character. I can also admit I'm not really a Harrison Ford fan either. To me he is a guy who got to play two now iconic roles in Solo, and Indian Jones. The rest of his work reads like a blank page to me. Now as I'm not emotionally attached to neither him or Star Wars I can give you an unbiased review on Solo.
Solo as you know is two things. It's the origin story of Han Solo, and it's the movie that lost Disney millions of dollars. It begins with Han stealing for a gang on a planet where orphans are used as criminals. He escape early on and joins the imperial army. When asked his last name he doesn't know it, as he's an orphan with no family. He is given the last name Solo as he's a solo guy. Over the years he meets a criminal named Becket, who at first thtows Solo into a pit with a monster who he hopes will kill him. That monster ends up being Chewbacca. They of course bond and after seeing this Becket frees both and hires them to steal cargo from an imperial ship.
From there we are introduced to a young Lando Calrissian which in turn shows us how Han got the Millennium Falcon. We learn about the Kessel Run which was discussed in Empire Strikes Back, and yes we even get to hear about the Gangster from Tatooine aka Jabba The Hut.
I didn't mind the film. I found it kind of cool to learn the backstory of Han Solo, as he was the only Star Wars character I remotely enjoyed. I get the backlash was that Harrison Ford was not playing Han, but I dont think anyone took two seconds to realize you don't cast and old man to play a punk kid. With that said I thought Alden Ehrenreich did a fine job as the character, but let's be honest Woody Harrelson as Bekett stole the show.
Boasting amazing effects with big cgi action sequences, the film does look and sound great. My main issue is the run time. Clocking in over two hours the film suffers from lots a lag points. It could have easily been cut down to a lean 90min making it more of a standard action film in space.
If your a Star Wars fan you hated this before it came out. And me, a non Star Wars fan can't change your mind. If your just a normal casual fan of the films, and enjoy a good Sci-fi action pick then you should give this a shot. It's not that bad.
Overall 2.5 out of 5 Stars
