The Church Blu-ray Review

3/20/2018

Picture
First thing, while considered a Dario Argento film, The Church was actually directed by Michelle Soavi.  Dario was a producer, who worked on the screenplay.  Little known fact, Lamerto Bava also helped with the screenplay as The Church was originally intended to be part of the Demon films.  And while watching you can definitely see the connection.

The Church is, well, about a church.  See back in Medieval Times a band of Knights decimated a group of devil worshippers and buried them under an old church.  They believed this would contain any evil that was possessing their body's. As things usually go in films that was an idea that had some serious flaws.

Flash forward to present day and The same Church has hired on a new librarian who discovers the tomb of all these bodies.  It's sealed, but as he is convinced it hold some type of treasure he decides to break it open thus releasing the evil spirits.  For some reason when this happens it also sets off the Churches  weird security like system that locks all the doors and seals everyone in from the inside.  Thus leaving them trapped with the evil that has just been unleashed.

Much like in the Demons films the evil spirits are presented as Zombie like demons, and like most Italian Horror films from this era its packed with tons of gore.  Set to a haunting soundtrack the film has hearts being ripped out, jackhammer impalement, heads being ripped off, and more.

Scorpion Releasing has done an amazing job with this Blu-ray transfer. Its one of the cleanest 2K scans I've seen.  I can only imagine how long it would take to fix all the colors from the original print.  The audio is exceptional as well.  The score is perfectly set to the film and bellows out of your speakers.  It even includes a few special features.

Scorpion Releasing is, in my opinion really going to be big in 2018 and if The Church is any indication I cant wait to see what they have coming up next.

Overall 3.5 out of 5 stars!
