The Flash Season 5 Blu-ray Review

8/19/2019

The following Blu-ray was provided to me by Warner Brother for review.  Thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Flash is the top show on the CW for a reason.  For 5 (getting ready to start 6) seasons its only gotten better.  Newly added characters are fantastic, especially Ralph “Elongated Man” Dibny, and the storylines just continue to get better and better. Taken from the pages of the comics but changed just enough to fit into a linear format for television, the storylines play out perfectly.   The fact that the show has not slowed down, no pun intended is a tribute to not only the writers but the cast as well.  Its not the most lighthearted of the superhero show bunch but its definitely compelling.  Season Five, once again builds the story with enough twists and turns to keep even the hardcore comic fans guessing.

Season Five begins with everyone meeting Nora, Barry, and Iris’s daughter from the future.  She appeared throughout season 4, culminating with her helping Flash destroy the Thinkers satellite.  We learn that not only does she have the Flashes Powers, but she is also a CSI like her father.  Her reasons for traveling back in time is that she wants to get to know her father who is gone in the future (the Crisis Paper we have seen since season 1 shows this).  Unfortunately her coming back and helping destroy the satellite has caused a change in the timeline.  They also have to deal with a New Villain named Cicada (played by Chris Klein of American Pie fame).

Cicada has a dagger that he can telepathically control.  What makes him double dangerous is that the dagger stripes meta humans of there powers when he’s nearby.  We also learn from Nora that he’s the only Villain that the Flash was never able to catch.  To get help the team once again brings in a Wells from another earth (Once again giving Thomas Cavanagh a chance to play a different version of the character) Harrison Sherloque Wells, the world greatest detective to help figure out who Cicada is.  As per the shows formula we still have the villain of the week, and one hell of a mid-season finale/twist.  We also have this year’s amazing Arrowverse Cross-over.

This time the entire 3 parter is included (Supergirl and Arrow being the other episodes as Legends was not in this years) This time it was Elseworlds.  And it may have been the most important crossover yet. It featured the Flash from Earth-90 coming to our earth to warn us that our world was going to be destroyed by the Monitor.  The Monitor has traveled to our earth  to give a mysterious book to John Deegan, a crazy psychiatrist who practices at Arkham Asylum.  He uses the book to rewrite the timeline.  Part of this rewrite is that Oliver is now The Flash living our Barry Allen’s life, while Barry is now the Green Arrow living out Oliver’s Life.  They are the only two who realize this and head to  Earth 38 to get help from Supergirl and Superman. Together they travel to Gotham City and meet Kate Kane aka Batwoman.  This was an amazing crossover and concludes telling us “Worlds will live, worlds will die, and the universe will never be the same” which sets up this years crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths” which is not only shaping up to change the Arrowverse, but it will also mark the end of the Arrow series. Plus its what the article in the paper saying Flash Missing in Crisis has all been building up to.
Warner Brothers has released this set on Blu-ray, and DVD, but to get the entire 3 part Elseworlds on one set is to buy the Blu-ray.  The audio and video are gorgeous.  These CW shows looks fantastic, and the Blu-ray transfers just highlight how amazing they look.  They really are comic books come to life.  You even get a good amount of special features along with all the episodes.
