The Nun Blu-ray Review

12/2/2018

Picture
The following Blu-ray was provided to me by Warner Brothers for review. Thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Nun is yet another part of the ever expanding "Conjuring Universe" it ties into the Conjuring,
and Annabelle series of films. The Nun takes place in 1952, so if your a stickler for timelines this would be the first of the series so far.

The Nun revolves around a Monastery in Romania. When the film begins we witness two nuns being attacked and killed by some type of demonic force.

When the Vatican learns of this they send in Father Burk, who has performed exorcisms and a nun named Sister Irene. They soon discover that evil lives there and Father Burk is soon attacked. It turns out the Nuns at the convention know about the demon and pray in shifts 24hrs a day to keep it at bay. The monastery itself is evil as it was built by a Duke during the middle ages who was interested in the occult. He brought the demon into this world but the Christian Knights were able to seal it into the tunnels underneath. However it managed to escape durring the bombing of the second world war.

The Nun got a lot of attention before it was even released as YouTube pulled the trailer deeming it "Too Frightening for audiences" it was re uploaded the next day. It was also a box office hit grossing over 365 million dollars, thus making it the most profitable of the Conjuring series so far.

The film is slow and relies entirely on jump scares. It's got a great look and feel though as it's truly creepy to watch. The acting is top notch as is the score which is simply amazing. It's got one of the best scores of a modern horror film I've hear in many years. The score alone makes this a must watch.

Warner Brothers has released this on Blu-ray and the print is great. The film is very dark and the sharp tones and contrast in the picture highlight this aspect. Throw in a fantastic audio transfer for that pulse pounding score and it's a definite winner in terms of video and audio quality.

If you liked the other films of this series and enjoy ghost and demon stories this will be right up your alley. If you weren't a fan of the other films then this will not be for you. As I said it's scare point is all jump scares. A bit to many for my taste as those can lose the effect if done to many times. The ending does bring it full circle with the other films so fans will want to check this out.

Overall 2.5 out of 5 Stars
