T'Challa was the monarch of the African nation of Wakanda. As the Wakandan monarch, he was also the former holder of the Black Panther mantle. After his father was killed in a bombing attack orchestrated by Helmut Zemo, the new monarch set out to kill the Winter Soldier, whom was widely believed to be responsible for the attack. After being drawn into the Avengers Civil War and siding with Iron Man, T'Challa learned the truth about Zemo's deception and decided to help the Winter Soldier by granting him asylum in Wakanda and also help him get a cure for his mental programming.
After his coronation, T'Challa began hunting down Ulysses Klaue, only to be confronted by his cousin Erik Killmonger, who sought the throne for himself. After a lengthy campaign, T'Challa defeated Killmonger and decided to introduce Wakandan technology to the United Nations.
When you get a definition of a hero like that in the beginning you know it's time for another Diamond Select Toys review. This one covers the new Black Panther PVC Diorama based on the new film. I stress that because Diamond Select also made one a few years back based on the Captain America Civil War film. Before you ask, yes they are different. I have both but this new one I'm talking about today I display along side the Killmonger Statue I reviewed last week.
As you can see The Black Panther stands with his claws extended on a mountain base with water in the middle. It symbolizes the ground where he would battle those who challenged him on Wakanda. Much like Killmonger this statue is highly detailed. But in what can only be described as brilliant sculpting Black Panther is designed more smooth where as the Killmonger is more "rough" showing the difference between the good an the bad.
Let focus first on the head. As you can see this time I am actually holding it closer to the camera. It's not a simple white over on the eye hole on the mask. You actually can see the eyes perfectly painted. There so well done you can feel the stare of a hero ready to do battle against a villain. The mask itself it true to the film as it has a slight color variation from the costume. It's a little more noticeable here just due to the lighting I used. The markings are etched in and painted to give it the full effect.
Moving on to the torso you can see the Wakanda necklace design in sculpted on to, once again look just as it did in the film. The chest and stomach (sorry for my hand in the way) are perfectly done to reflect the anatomy of the hero. Showing each muscle underneath the costume. The costume itself has etchings and designs to show off the detail, as you can clearly see the elements where the vibraniam is infused through out
This side shot captured how graceful yet deadly the Black Panther is. From the "V" shaped position of the torso to the quads, which are also molded to amazing life-like detail, you see the hands outstretched, claws ready to strike out at the enemy. The way the body is formed and placed on the base gives it that full 3D effect that I think Diamond Select Toys has set the standard for. Trust me when I say this pic does not do it justice when it comes to looking at this in person. It feels like it's going to pounce at any moment.
One thing I really want to point out are the Panthers claws. You can see they are crafted into very fine points. Now when you touch them you can actually feel the tip on them. Nothing overly sharp but to me that's a fine point of detail. Most hands on statues are rounded off and simply painted. Diamond Select always goes above and beyond and this one is no exception. Perfectly pointed, shaped and painted the hands on this design helps set it apart.
Looking at the back you can clearly see the attention to not only the muscles but yo the etchings on the costume itself. Line after line is etched into the design to give it the full life like look. Forming a perfect V shape on top the Panther looks perfect in terms of not only flexing his muscles, but having the 3D look all around. Also notice how one foot is planted but the other is slightly raised and just planted down on the toes. The arch in the leg only highlights the pose it's set it.
I really like this base, and how the design has the waterfall in the center. Now one thing, and it may be hard to explain but look at the color of the water. It's not a bright blue like you would expect it to be. It's a unique color of almost a blue with green. The water is sculpted, shaded, and painted to give it a realistic look. You can see the highlights of white mixed into it to give it the splash and crashing wave look. Now at first I was like "this looks strange, it's too green" but then I saw how lights hit it. When the sunlight hit it, it looked about as real as you could get. My son has this next to Killmonger which happens to sit by his fish tank. When I happened to change the back light of the talk to a different color I could see all the elements of the water design which only adds to the realism of the rock base itself.
Once again we have another winner on our hands here. This is an amazing piece to add to your Marvel collection and it looks amazing next to the Killmonger Statue that came out a few weeks ago. I can't recommend picking this one up enough. There are other Black Panther Statues out there, some which cost a lot more, but out of the ones I have, and have seen this is definitely the nicest one to get. Perfect for a Collector and perfect for kids who loved the movie.
Overall 5 out of 5 Stars!
