Normally I would post a little bit about Aquaman and his origin but it's changed a bit over the years. Bottom line he still rules Atlantis and can talk to fish. In fact when I was a kid he was a come character everyone mad fun of because his power was he talked to fish. Now over the course of a few decades he's background has changed a bit. He's been made a bit tougher and more hip so to speak. I actually read his new adventures.
With all that said about his publication history lets not forget he has his own movie coming out and he was in Justice League. Yes the movie I actually like. To be honest he was my favorite character in the film. Now granted he looks nothing like he does in comics but the movie look added to a new attitude and hopefully a new generation of fans. As I said he was my favorite character in the film and now he is my favorite statue from Diamond Select Toys Justice League line of statues.
Let's start at the top. He doesn't have blond hair anymore, Jason Momoa has long brown hair. As you can see this statue is a dead ringer for him. The hair looks great because of the painting at etchings throughout. It has a look of not only being wet from swimming in the sea but also a blowing in the wind look as if he just emerged from the water and and a heavy wind is blowing at him. I also love the attention to detail when it comes to the weird eyebrows. Thick like an old dictaor from the 70s and curved like an angry demon they add to the general tough guy tone that is painted in the eyes. The snear in the mouth is just right as is the shadow style beard. This is like looking at a picture of Momoa come to life it's so detailed.
The body is exactly how the new costume looks. This picture can't begin to show just how much work went into this. The costume is like a spandex armor chain thing and this hits it outta the park. They line is etched in and painted to form an exact replica. You can see not only every little detail but the detail of the muscles under the costume as well. You can see all the shading gives this a battle worn fresh out of water look. The shoulder pads aatick out just right and everything looks movie accurate. From the fins on the wrist to the wrapping on the knuckles
Looking at this side shot you can see the detail that went into Aquaman's weapon of choice, the trident. Each head is sculpted to a tee and the middle head sticks higher up ready to be plunged into an enemy. You can see how each finger is sculpted and it's done so in such a way a that it gives the impression that he's got a death grip on the weapon.
Now for my favorite part. The base. I was a little critical of the Wonder Woman base for being so simple. I liked The Flash base as it was so detailed but Aquaman takes center stage. Standing on a bed if rocks the front and especially the back has the oceans water crashing against the base. This is simply gorgeous as the water is sculpted in such a detailed manor you can see each crashing wave blowing and crashing behind Aquaman. The perfect greenish blue color is amazing, and much like the Black Panther base this looks so good when the light hits it. It really and truly looks like real ocean water crashing at Aquamans feet.
Even if you didn't like the film this is a piece to add to your collection. I cannot stress how well this looks and how the base just complements and completes everything. Diamond Select Toys has there statues down to a sweet science and every collector and parent whos kids love superheroes should be picking these up. Aquaman is a definite beauty and my personal favorite of their Justice League Movie Line. Go buy this today.
