As you can see I'm back with another Diamond Select Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 Diorama review. This one as you can tell is Drax, along with everyone's favorite Baby Groot. Sculpted by Rocco Tartamella this is one you want right there next to your Star-Lord and Gamora (who comes with Rocket)
As you can see Drax is in full battle ready pose standing on a wood like base, with a tree stump and rock, and a few other elements painted in to give it a swampy like planet atmosphere. His knives are drawn and Baby Groot is right there by his side, or more so at his feat. Drax, played in the films by former WWE Wrestler Dave Bautista is definitely a favorite of the group as he basically stole every scene in Volume 2. Baby Groot in the embodiment of cute, and has spawned countless mems and merchandise so that only adds to the appeal of this one.
Lets focus on his head and upper body first. Drax, is by all means an idiot. Granted he's a powerful warrior but he is definitely not the brains of the group. This not only looks just like him, but it also captures the intimidating, yet completely clueless stare that Drax has in the films. From the cheekbones, to the eyes, which really seem to follow you this is the spitting image of Drax. The nose and mouth and ears are all perfectly detailed.
The upper torso not only has the chest and ab muscles perfectly sculpted but the tattoo markings. There etched in like we have seen from other Diamond Select Dioramas to give it the full 3D look. Painted over the markings them perfectly shaded these are exactly like Drax has in the films. Trust me I checked. Trivia time. Those tattoos symbolize the family that Drax lost He called it his "Soul union with Ovette upon Mount Kilos"
As you can see the detail did not stop on the front, that back continues the etching of the tattoo designs as well. What's astounding is that if you look closely you can see every little detail in the back. All of the back muscles are sculpted in before being painted over. Even he elbow bone is done in a way to add realism to this piece. It blows my mind at how realistic this figure is.
You can see his pants as perfectly shaded with wrinkles put in to give it a wore torn look from fighting bad guys. His belt is perfectly done as well showing off every button, pouch, and stud on it. Even his boot straps are perfectly sculpted on as well
One of the things Drax is know for are his 2 daggers he uses to attack enemy's with. These are removable and everything about them looks perfect. The handle grips, the blades, the look great. You can see how the blades angle ot and have indents no doubt caused by him slashing his enemy's, but they are also covered in blood. I must say the blood adds a nice "Tough" ouch to them. Is painted on in such a way it looks real. Unlike a lot of bloody design figures, this is painted in shades. and painted in a blotchy time manor. Its not merely a design of red dolloped on the blade, no this looks like it just came out of a bad guys innards and the blood is freshly flowing on the blade itself. Designers of horror related merchandise should really take note on how Rocco Tartamella painted this on.
OK, here is what your waiting to see. Baby Groot. Voiced by Vin Diesel this little thing really became a pop culture phenomenon. I don't think there is a kid at my sons school who doesn't have a Baby Groot shirt. Hell my wife has a Baby Groot cell phone charger in her car.
This is the best Baby Groot deign I have seen. Its sculpted in a way I cant really describe. Its as if a real tree was used. he entire body is intertwined just like a tree branch forming little Baby Groot. The true sell point is the eyes and mouth. Sculpted and painted big on the statue the thing just scream adorable. With the tiny almost button like nose bump to the simple look on the mouth you really want to pick him up and hug him. I mean he even has his arms outstretched to give you a hug for God's Sake! But you cant! Sorry he's mounted to the base, he doesn't come off. I would love to see Baby Groot get his own stand alone Diorama at some point.
Look at it stare at you. Fans of the films, and collectors will no doubt want to pick this one up. Its another fantastic piece, and I really have to once again tip my hat to not only Diamond Select but Rocco Tartamella as well for another amazing work of art.
