Deadline is reporting a live-action TV series based on Street Fighter is in the works from Entertainment One. The show will also feature the creative team behind Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, a 2014 web series that received strong reviews. The story will closely mirror that of the Street Fighter II game, and will focus on characters like Chun-Li, Ken, Ryu and Guile as they try to take down criminal mastermind M. Bison. They all take part in Bison’s World Warrior Tournament, which is a competition to determine who is the most powerful fighter in the world.
While live-action adaptations of video games are usually cause for alarm thanks to the dreaded video game movie curse, there’s still reason to be optimistic about a Street Fighter show. Assassin’s Fist was warmly received by fans and critics, managing to balance the cheesy, over the top aspects of the game while making viewers invest in the characters. Netflix’s Castlevania also showed it was possible to take classic games and reinvent them for a new audience. To date, Castlevania is the only game adaptation rated fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
