Dark Nights: Metal is a monthly comic book published by DC Comics that began in June 2017 and lasted until April 2018. Dark Nights: Metal is part of a larger crossover storyline, which include the eponymous six-issue core miniseries, and a number of tie-in books. The plot was written by Scott Snyder, with art by Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion and FCO Plascencia. The story closely links with Snyder and Capullo's run on Batman during The New 52 DC relaunch. The story involves Batman discovering a dark multiverse that exists beneath the core DC multiverse. It is revealed that both multiverses are connected through mysterious metals that Batman has encountered over the years. His investigations eventually result in him releasing seven evil versions of himself from the dark multiverse, led by the dark god known as Barbatos, who plans to unleash darkness across every Earth.
Metal is a really cool comic book. I like it because of all the variations of Batmen we get to see. A Green Lantern Batman, Red Death Batman, and my personal favorite Armored Batman. A weird combination of medieval night mixed with a samurai. Its really a great design, and now the good folks at Diamond Select are making this amazing drawing a statue. And let me say its massive. I have the others in the collection, and I placed this one right in the middle This may very well be the largest Batman piece I have. The size of this is ridiculous. Let me say up front these pictures do no justice to just how large and cool this one is.
Lets start right at the face. This is one mean looking statue. I’m going to point out the mouth first. Its opened and in pure kill mode. Opened with the teeth clenching together. All the teeth are individually sculpted and they are caked in the purple, almost red like substance of whatever it is Batman is battling, but more on that later. The jaw is square and the cheek bones are sculpted up to further add to the almost evil look this piece has about it. I really like how if you look inside the mouth you can see the open areas on the side from where the opening is exposed. That’s a great touch of detail. The eyes a pure white, but because of the mouth, and check design they look ominous in a piercing way. The medieval style armor in full effect. It even has the trademark horns on the cowl on it. Made of metal this time of course, but they are still there. Notice how the helmet itself is a full battle damaged grey, with a piece of purple kill on it where as the mask area and neck piece is black. In fact if you look close you can see it’s a leather and coil black outfit under the grey armor itself. The chest is the big black Batsignal that is not only damaged itself but welded on the grey chest plate that is also completely damaged. Full of scuffs, scratches, dents, you name it. Shaded in dark grey and black this Batman has been through a war. One of side note, if you look close you can see the shoulder pads have a winged bat look about them.
Here’s a good side shot that shows off quite a bit of not only the body, but the weapon as well. An old rapier style sword that is completely covered in a purple like substance. I really dig how the armor itself is designed. It has a samurai look about it. The cod piece with the flaps, the leather belt, complete with gold buckles, even the swashbuckling style boots it definitely a different design to say the least. Like I mentioned above you can see the black outfit under the costume with the heavily battle damaged armor covering Batman. Notice the ungodly amount of scrapes, dents, and just all around filth. This is a costume that has seen some wars to say the least. All the armor is done in a very heavy metal style. I especially love how the shoulder pads are all filtered own in points like bat wings. The belt deign matches the outfit, but is done in leather, yet still blends in with the same color tone. Notice the piece of purple tail, or intestine, or something that is on the left shoulder pad. Having body parts or entrails of the monster you are fighting on the piece itself in genius to say the least, plus it gives it a splash of color.
Let’s take a look at the cape from the back. Black and grey and full of rips and holes. Notice how the end is completely tattered and worn out as opposed to a smooth look. The wrinkles and flaps in the cape are all molded in and shaded a dark grey and black combination for the weathered out dirty look. It sticks straight out from the back as its blowing in the wind. It’s a huge cape which has always been a Batman trademark and this really does look like the original version, just completely full of holes. You can see its even covered in the remnants of purple spots towards the bottom. You also get a great look at the shield Batman is holding in his right hand. It’s a big dark grey battle damaged Bat. Full of holes and scratches. It’s a great accessory as the bat signal is iconic, so what better to use as a shield that a big metal bat
The base is basically a combination of two things. The rock area the Batman is standing on, and the spilled remains of the enemy he is battling. I assume is some type of dragon or octopus like monster that is purple. Tentacles, guts, blood, you name it, this base is covered. I really like the fact its purple, not only because that’s one of my favorite colors but because its bright and adds loads of depth to this statue. Take notice how even Batman’s shoes and boots are covered in puddles of the purple blood. You can see the grey rock like substance under all the purple mess. This is a great look statue highlighted by a truly unique base.
Regardless if you’re a fan of Batman Metal or not this is one cool piece to add to your Batman collection. Like I pointed out it is massive so it will take up a bit of space. Its defiantly the most unique Batman statues I have seen. Go and pick this one up today.
