Heir to the Wayne family fortune, Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) lives by day as a seemingly lavish playboy millionaire socialite, but by night assumes the role of his crime-fighting alter-ego: the caped crusader known as Batman. Throughout the show, Batman receives help from sidekicks Robin (Loren Lester) and Batgirl (Melissa Gilbert), as well as Police Commissioner Gordon (Bob Hastings), in protecting the streets of Gotham City from a large rogue's gallery of criminals, lunatics, and nemeses.
Considered by many the greatest version of Batman to ever come out, Batman The Animated Series is beloved in every sense of the word. The style, stories, depiction, voice action, it all fit the look and feel of Batman to a “T” Diamond Select Toys, the greatest toy makers of all time have been releasing Batman statues from the show for some time. There newest one features Batman shooting his trusty grappling hook, and I must say it’s amazing.
Now first let’s look at this head shot. This is detailed to perfection. Every detail, including the chin indent is perfect, its exactly like the Animated episode down to a tee. The oversized strong square jaw with the lip slightly up to give it the trademark Batman sneer looks great. There is a slight shadow under the cowl to give it a bit of depth. The cowl is the smooth standard black with pure white eyes. It’s a dead ringer for the cartoon version. I love how its done sleek and smooth just like a drawing. Nothing was changed in this. Its modeled exactly like it was drawn in the cartoon. The cowl connects to the cape and I really love how there is a small swatch of deep blue (like the inside of the cape) on the front to give it a little variance.
Moving down you can see how the Bat Signal is raised on the figure to give it a more heightened look, and the spikes on the gloves stick out just like they did in the Animated Series. Even the knee cap area of the figure is done to mimic the look of the animated series. The utility belt has every nick and pouch and I particularly like how the cape folds on the left hand side giving the impression that the wind is blowing it as batman is getting ready to spring into action. The chest is even sculpted to show the peck muscles and the twist of the figure even has the line where the oblique muscle would be You can even see the blue swatch in the shorts and on the tip of the left boot. That is serious attention to detail. Lets not forget about the utility belt either. Bright yellow to match the chest plate with the groves sculpted in.
This is a shot of the back. Look closely at the shoulders. You can see where the cape is sculpted to be slightly lifted up as though it is blowing in the wind. Think about that for a second. This is a statue based on an animated figure and Diamond Select still took the time to give it a three dimensional look and feel. Now that's the kind of stuff you don't see in many animated versions that come to life as Diorama's The cape is a solid black with once again that slight blue swatch at the top. I love how the ears of the cowl stick up a bit more in the animated version, this back shot gives you a good look at that.
As you can see he is holding a grappling gun because that is like a bad ass weapon in every sense of the word. It’s in full fire mode as well. Being gripped in his hands, which if you look you can see the fingers sculpted to wrap around the handle which makes it that much more cool. The rope of the gun spins around like a real cable. It connects to the hook mechanism with is sculpted but made smooth just like the drawing. And I must point out again you can notice that it has the curve in the cable done just right to it to give it a perfect 3D like effect.
The base is simply amazing. A brownish grey bat, made to look not only like a rock like pillar, but to mimic the chest emblem as well. It looks fantastic, and it’s a great look for a base. I want everyone to look at the cape as well. See how its Blue, and not only blue but a bright blue. I love that so much. You know why? Because the Animated series (aside from the great Adam West) is the only one to do it the right way. Batman does not wear all black! The inside of his cape is blue, and to me adding the fact that the cape is open and flowing behind him just makes this all the more fantastic. I love the bright colors used, so the black boots combined with the back visual of the blue cape on a brown almost grey base give this a full on 3D effect. It looks like it is actually leaning in to battle. That to me is the final element needed to really showcase this beautiful diorama.
