Selina Kyle is Catwoman, a Gotham City expert thief who crossed paths with Batman on many occasions. Having largely left behind her villainous ways, she now operates as a frequent ally of the Batman Family.
Catwoman has always been a favorite Batman character of mine. Sometimes the enemy, now more often than not the partner and romantic interest of Batman. And this statue is exactly how I like her. The old school Purple and black outfit. Not the leather black, or the new outfit with the big goggles. Nope This is the classic look and it’s the look I like. Diamond Select is just killing it with these Batman comic inspired pieces and this is no exception.
Looking at the head the first thing I noticed was the trademark longer jaw line that all of these characters were drawn with. She has the original mask from the comics that actually has the cat ears that stick out on the top and both sides of her head. The lips are painted a bit more red in this line to give it that femme fatale look. Also the hair is done very wavy with some etching to give it volume, but still sleek like the comic style. It's not sculpted real word to give it all the texture, just black and molded to flow and curl over her shoulders and around her ears. The one aspect I really like is the placement of the cat on her shoulder. It is a black cat so it almost blends in with the hair. Throw in the fact that the eyes are a faint green with sleek eyebrows all visible inside the oversized eye holes on the mask and you have a picture perfect match from the comics.
Moving to the body you can see what I was stating about the sleek design but with a few wrinkles that are sculpted in. There are a few above her chest and a few around the waist where her leg is bending back. Not too much, just enough to add to the realism. The outfit is deep purple and black for the arms and legs, all done very bright, but not enough to make it look like a cartoon. No this matches the comic version perfectly. You can see the wrinkles are primarily done around the leg and chest area, which really does break up the purple and black and give the piece contrast. I love how this is basically 2 colors, but everything is done to really make it all stand out. The body is done perfectly. Sculpted to look just like Catwoman does in the books. I really like how Diamond Select can make the same character look different in each piece they do.
This side shot give you a great look at Catwoman’s long gloves. The arm is done long, due to the placement and the black with wrinkles around the top of the arm and again at the wrist to add some movement to it. You can see how its pointed straight down, and all the fingers are individually sculpted to hold it. It goes up and around twisting behind the chimney on the base of the piece. It really stands out and give this a striking look. You can see the wrinkles in the outfit by the wrist which is about as accurate as you can get. Looking down you get a good shot of the boots as well. Black leather high heeled boots that blend perfectly into the outfit. The placement of the legs is perfectly done as well. This really is a well done piece that stands out.
The back shot shows off not only the cat, but the hair as well. The cat, although still done in cartoon style looks very realistic. Molded to have a “puffy” hair look about it you can see it resting gently on her shoulder, with the tail hanging down her back. Her hair, which is smooth, yet still has some etching to it is twisting to the left giving the impression its blowing in the wind. You can see a few, very few, wrinkled molded into the outfit as well. Not many as it has that comic book sleek style to it but just a few for placement. Around the armpit area, and again a slight one at the waist where she is bending to the side. You can see elements of grey shaded into the cat to make it different just a bit from her black hair. For a two color piece this really does stand out.
The base, is just that, a base. A grey circle with two comic book cats sitting inside her legs. The cats are black, but a lighter black with grey shading to help keep them separate from her jet black boots. I love how the cat in between her legs has bright green eyes. In fact they look like they are glowing. Her hand is placed down with all her fingers outstretched resting on the base itself. It’s a very nice touch that takes nothing away from the piece itself.
If you’re a fan of the old school Catwoman design this is a must have piece. Its just another one of the amazing Batman comic book items Diamond Select Toys has been doing as of late. I have mine sitting next to my DC Classic Comic Batman statues. This is a must own for collectors and fans alike. Pick one up right away.
