Lex Luthor was originally a mad scientist, but since the late 1980s, he has more often been portrayed as a power-mad business magnate, the CEO of LexCorp. He wishes to rid the world of Superman, ostensibly because Superman is a threat to humanity, but really because he envies Superman's popularity and influence. Given his high profile as a supervillain, however, he has often come into conflict with Batman and other superheroes in the DC Universe. Lex Luthor is an ordinary human and has no natural superpowers but occasionally wears his War suit, a suit of mechanized armor that gives him enhanced strength, flight, advanced weaponry, and other capabilities.
I have a lot of amazing statues, I mean its evident by the reviews I do. Lots of Batman, X-Men, Deadpool, even a few Superman ones. But one statue I never had, nor have I ever seen one of was Superman’s Arch Enemy Lex Luthor. Well that’s all about to change thanks to the great folks at Diamond Select. They have just released a brand new Lex Luthor in his War suit firing a blast and it looks great. Let’s take a look
Lifted right off the pages of the comic book lets look at the head first. This may be comic book style and inspired but I have to say it looks real a real person. Almost like Lex jumped off the pages and came to life. Normal flesh colored base, with subtle little aspects of a darker tone to add shading and depth to make it more realistic. I like how the bald head, a Lex trademark is smooth. It really gives it a classic comic look. Line etched into the forehead that perfectly match the slightly raised eyebrows. Even the little indenting on the cheekbones show off his slightly opened lips. This is a real expression sculpted into this head. His mouth is slightly opened exposing his top teeth. You can even see his chin is slightly raised. Ears, nose, cheeks, it all looks real. If you look at the neck area you can see his metallic purple bodysuit that goes under his armor. Its done in a very shiny metallic style paint. You can see the war suit itself is done in a bold, not bright, but very metallic green. This piece shines in the light to say the least. It looks like real steel. Every line and attachment is sculpted in perfectly. You can see how its raised on and over the back of the head, with a little bit of off white painted on the collar. This matches the outfit that Lex wears to a “T”
Notice the body. You can see how everything may be done in the same color, but its actually a multiple part suit. The chest plate is oversized. You can see the lines, and molding sculpted throughout to give it that almost robotic look and feel. The chest plate, an octagon shaped purple and white emblem that almost looks like a reactor is dead center. Notice how the arms, which are the same color keep in mind are attached to the outfit. You can see how they are actually attached to the center. The lines line in the comics are designed right into the arms and legs. You can see the purple gloves Lex is wear that are armor as well. Same goes for the legs. He has the purple belt attachment then straight into armored legs with purple armored boots. Everything done to make it look like metal. Notice the dead center of the right hand. You can see the little white blaster sculpted into it where he fires his Kryptonite blasts.
Speaking of blast lets look at his left side . You can see the bright yellow blast shooting out of his hand. Notice how every finger is individually sculpted. Also take special notice of how the arms are designed to be slightly pulled back as the blast clearly has force behind it. In fact the placement of the piece really showcases that. From the pulled back left had, to the planting and twisting of the legs this is really high detailed. I love how the blast looks so realistic. It’s a yellow, almost golden plasma style shot. It looks almost like a crystal. You can see how its filled with shading to give it a three dimensional look and feel. Starting small from the cannon in the hand getting larger and smaller again as it shoots out. Diamond Select does a great job designing fire, smoke, and these types of blast and this is no exception. It looks amazing, and under light it looks downright real.
The back shows off the mechanical style spine. You can see the shoulder and arm plates attach to the main backing. I giant robotic style spine that is fully shaded and etched to look as if it is an actual spine bending. I love all the small light black shading that is painted throughout the back of this piece. It not only gives it depth but it helps to show off every little screw and welding in it. You can see the bolts on the sides in the center of the spine unit. You also get a good look at the two giant purple bolts that hold the leg armor in place as well. The arching of the piece is evident as well in this shot as Lex is firing his blaster.
The base is very ominous to say the least. It’s the smashed up globe of the Daily Planet. Yes, the iconic glob has clearly been destroyed in this battle and Lex is standing in the wreckage. Grey, white and black all blended together to create the destroyed globe itself. You can see all the cracks and just overall destruction throughout. You can see the copper colored demolished letters of the daily planet at the bottom. Still hanging on . The metal letters are all dented and smashed. The shading is done perfectly to show all the filth that the wreckage has done to them. You even see parts of the metal wrap around that held them into place sticking up and over this base. It’s a very dark style of base, especially if you’re a Superman fan and it helps set the tone of this entire piece.
This is a great statue to add to your collection. I had to move a few things around so I could place it next to my Superman comic statue. It’s a great addition for any comic book or DC fan to have. I love the fact it’s a comic book style piece, and I really like how they added a few slight touches to make it look real. Pick this one up right away.
Overall 5 out of 5 Stars!
