When a mysterious man in a green cloak asks Billy Batson to follow him into the subway station. A magic subway car painted in unusual shapes and colors escorts them to an underground throne room, which is inhabited by a very old man with a long beard and a white robe. As the man in green disappears, the old man on the throne explains to Billy that he is the Wizard Shazam, and has used the powers of "the gods" - Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, hence the name "Shazam" - to fight evil for over 3,000 years. However, he has now grown too old to continue and is in need of a successor. The wizard explains that Billy was chosen due to his misfortune: he had been thrown out by a greedy uncle who stole his inheritance following the deaths of his parents (later retellings of the origin would also note that Billy was chosen for being "pure of heart").Ordered by the wizard to speak the name "Shazam," Billy is struck by a sudden bolt of lightning and transformed into a super powered adult in a red costume with gold trim.
Shazam starring Zachary Levi is DC’s best superhero film to date in my opinion. Fun, bright, colorful, and full of likable characters. The fact it was a family style superhero film did not bother me as it really needed to be with a hero like Shazam. Diamond Select Toys has put out a remarkable PVC Statue to honor this great film and it looks just as colorful and bright as the character in the movie.
The face is awesome. It’s the spitting image of Zachary Levi. The hair stands out to me as its done real style, but slicked back to give it almost a comic book look. The cheeks are especially well done. You can see how they are slightly sucked in and shaded just a bit darker. You combine that with the stern yet almost happy lips and slightly raised eyebrows and you have a truly realistic look.. Take into account that lighting is hitting him, the look in the eyes is almost polarizing. The torso looks great. A combination of Bright and deep maroon with gold, white and blue this is the comic book drawing come to life. Take notice of the rib cage. It’s shaded a bit darker to shadow the lightning that if flowing down and also to show the muscles underneath the costume. It looks great. The entire torso looks great. Making the lightning bolt bright blue with touches of white with some blue that is brighter than the rest looks great. It looks like the lightning is flowing though the costume. The gold belt looks good, as it has the lightning bolts etched throughout
Moving to the side you can the top of the white, almost cream colored cape. I love how the cape curves to give it the blowing in the wind look. You also have to be impressed with the arms. You can see all of the muscles getting ready to pop through the costume. Painted and shaded just right to give it an amazingly real look but still holding the comic book style. The fist flexing and outstretched puts in yet another piece of the tough guy puzzle. I also like how both legs are straight and almost flexing it adds to the feeling that this Shazam is ready for a fight. And last but not least let’s discuss the lighting. Coming from Shazam’s chest as it comes from the sky, it twists and turns to about Shazam’s thigh. It’s bright and cark blue, yet clear at the same time. It goes off in all types of different directions and when light hits it, it looks pretty realistic. It’s the definite sell point of this piece and really makes it stand out
The back pretty much speaks for itself. The white and gold cape flowing in the wind. It's of course painted bright white but if you look you can see the shading done in the areas it sculpted to give it that flowing look. This is a perfect example of why Diamond Select is leaps and bounds ahead of other competition.
The base is simple as it’s a brownish etched up boulder. It flows like a real boulder and it’s designed very well, but the boots are the main feature here. The classic comic book look. Bright gold It catches the eye and really stands out. The way the feet are planted are a nice touch as well. With the both feet firmly planted on the base it gives it a really solid look.
Overall this is a great piece that belongs in your collection. It goes great next to Diamond Selects other DC Comic book line inspired statues. Hurry and pick this one up today.
Overall 5 out of 5 Stars.
