Psylocke is a pretty cool X-Men character. From the powers to the look she’s a fascinating hero as well as villain, as she has flip flopped a few times. She was featured in the X-Men Apocalypse film and really stole the show. She’s always been one of my favorite characters in the comics and I was thrilled to find out that Diamond Select has made a limited edition resin statue of her. I’m just going to say this upfront. This may be the nicest resin piece I have seen from Diamond Select, and it’s definitely the nicest of their X-Men resin collection.
Here she is, let’s start at the top. Psylocke, just like in the comics. Now, like I always point out, this is a comic book style statue, so it will be smooth like the drawings as opposed to the fully etched real world look. She looks identical to the drawings. Shoulder length black hair that flows down and back while the back and sides blows in the wind. Here eyebrows are painted slightly up to give her a bit of a menacing look. Her head is turned slightly to the right allowing her hair to give an impression it is blowing in the wind. Her lips are done in the classic comic book red style as I like to call it, with a slightly longer and pointed jaw. I love how the hair is sleek like the comic book style but still bunched and etched to give it somewhat of a real hair look. Very minimal shading is done on this as it is a comic based piece but I can say it is definitely spot on to the books. Her lips are done in a deep red as opposed to the cherry bright red you see on lots of these pieces. The flesh color is shaded just enough in the exposed areas to give her a touch of realism yet still keeping in line with the sleek comic style.
Moving down you get a great look at the outfit. Its leather style and is sculpted in an leather like style as opposed to the “Elephant skin” style. Its painted and designed smooth, but the skin style really makes it stand out. It’s a deep blue with a red sash. I really like the addition of the black shading in so many different variations. The piece is a dark blue, but under these lights you can see all the elements used to shade it to give it a more rounded look. It shines like a comic design bust stand out almost like a real world design. Her arm bands, leg bands, boots, and gloves are the same blue color as the outfit with plenty of spacing in between to accent the skin tones. Everything comes together. It’s a two color outfit but everything about it stands out. There is black shading done throughout the piece but not overly done. Just enough to show off some of the curves and shape of the body. You can see how is shines under the light in this photo. The legs are painted in a flesh color with just a few touches of faint light shading. The shading is a faint red, almost darker skin tone as opposed to black which makes it look like real flesh. The red sash in the center looks very cool as it is also done in that sleek style. This is the spitting image of the comic book drawing to say the least.
This side shot gives you a couple of great looks. First you can see the etching and shading done through her hair as it blows to the left. It even has a nice little curve to it on the end tip. You can see the shaded flesh color very clear in her legs. Under the light it actually looks very realistic even though it’s a comic book style design. You can see her sash blowing behind her all twisted up with a few touches of black thrown into the bright red. Psylocke can focus her telepathic energies into a solid psychic knife that usually manifests into the color of a faint purple or pink. You can see that taking place here. As her left arm is pulled back and outstretched you can see the big ball of energy coming from her hand. Its actually overtaking her hand as you can see her fist inside it. The blast knife itself looks like a pale ruby. It’s coming out and around every which way possible. It truly looks like a blast of energy. Balled up around the fist but shooting out into a sharp point. It almost looks like blown glass its so well done. Very minimal on the shading but well detailed as far as the sculpting. It really makes this piece not only stand out, but it also shows off her powers as well.
The back gives you a great look at the hair. When doing the comic book style pieces the hair is only minimally etched as to keep that sleek look from the books. Diamond Select does an amazing job with this, as they still do lots of etching ad shading. Psylocke’s hair is black, but under the light it has an almost purple tint to it. Fully etched to show hair lines this is a massive piece of hair. It flows to side and down parts of her back. You get a great look at all the detail that went into the sash as well. It twists and turns like mad, as it blows in the wind behind her. It’s a long sash as it hangs close to her calf. You can see some of the muscles sculpted throughout the body. Notice the “Slit” in her quads as her leg is bent and slightly twisted. I also like how her right arm is a perfect fist and drawn back behind her ready to strike. This is a very well detailed piece.
If you’re an X-men fan or a Marvel collector this is a must have for your collection. Like I said though it is limited to 3000 pieces so you need to act fast. I can’t stress again how well sculpted this piece is. It’s a definite must own. Pick one up today while you still can.
