Thanos was born on Saturn’s moon Titan as the son of A'Lars, and Sui-San and his brother is Eros also known as Starfox. Thanos carries the Deviants gene, and as such, shares the physical appearance of the Eternals' cousin race. At birth, his mother was shocked by his appearance and attempted to kill him, due to believing that her son would annihilate all life in the universe, but was stopped by A'Lars, Thanos' father. During his school years, Thanos was a pacifist and would only play with his brother and pets. By adolescence, Thanos had become fascinated with nihlism and death, worshipping and eventually falling in love with the physical embodiment of death, Mistress Death As an adult, Thanos augmented his physical strength and powers through his superior scientific knowledge. He also attempted to create a new life for himself by siring many children as well as becoming a pirate. He finds no fulfillment in either until he is visited again by Mistress Death, for whom he murders his offspring and his pirate captain.
Thanos is the big bad in the Marvel universe, there is no denying that. He has beaten every hero to a pulp at one time or another, even the Hulk. Now Thanos towers over everyone he faces so it should come as no surprise that this latest Marvel Milestones Thanos piece from Diamond Select Toys is massive. And I mean massive. This is one of the biggest pieces they have done to date. It weighs over 40lbs stands close to 18 inches tall and has a base a little over 16 inches wide. This is a big heavy piece to say the least. So when you open it be sure you have a nice amount of room.
As I said up front this thing is massive. I had to display it on my desk as it was too wide and heavy to place on one of my figure, or book shelves. Look at this You have to build it. Now don’t worry it literally takes about 1minute. You attach the arms, then insert it in the base. Simple and quick. It just has to come this way do to size, and of course protection of the piece. You can see all the pieces are wrapped in plastic bags and resting in Styrofoam the size of a small briefcase. Now another thing I want to point out is due to the gigantic size I have this on one of my arcade tables as it was not fitting in a picture box. I can also say there was not a scratch on this. This is a perfectly wrapped and packed piece so don’t worry about it taking a few bumps in the mail.
Let’s look right at his giant head. It’s crafted perfectly. You can see all the lines and indents sculpted into it. The lines are etched and shaded in a combination of black and grey as such to give it a shadow look thus creating a touch of realism. The mouth is fantastic. You can see all of the individually sculpted teeth as well as Thanos’s tongue. And let me just say this, this things is menacing looking to say the least The nose and cheek bones are formed up and the eyes are slightly slanted down to give him a menacing look. His eyes are well painted in a bright white and almost feel like he’s looking at you. The lines throughout the face give it the sense that he is contemplating his next evil move while yelling out in battle. His head is crafted to give his head a dome look. The shading sculpting and painting give him the perfect Avengers Endgame film look. His head is covered by his helmet which he wore in the comics as well as the film all the time. It’s a faded blue with golden armor. I really like how the gold on the top of the dome match the rest of the body. And as he is no doubt beating up the Avengers this piece is battle damaged beyond belief in terms of scuffing and shading.
This front shot shows how movie accurate the body is. The dark blue almost grey uniform with the golden armor look great. It’s painted and shaded to give it that full armored look as well as feel. You can see all the muscles under the costume and as it’s made larger than most of the Marvel statues it truly has a larger than life feel. The positioning is fantastic as well. The chest piece almost looks puffed out really showing off the size of Thanos. The armor sticks up on the shoulders down the chest on the legs and arms, everywhere. It really does look like real armor one would wear into battle. The shading is incredible as well. Everything is smeared and dirty so you know Thanos is in a fight. The color placement is marvelous. Dirty gold and a grey blue but yet it still shines. As I said at 18 inches tall he would not fit in my backdrop box but you can still see every line, and design in not only the gold armor which is raised up, but the normal body armor as well. It is as if he jumped out of your television it is so realistic.
This side shot shows off Thanos’s double edge sword. For my fellow nerds out there its made of Uru Metal in the books which is the strongest metal in the galaxy. Stronger than Captain Americas shield which is vibranium, but the same as say Thors hammer, hence why when Cap had the hammer he was able to start beating Thanos without damaging it. This is a very detailed weapon. Its built into the hand so once you attach the arm its read to go. You can see Thanos’s pale purple fingers which are all individually sculpted wrapped around the handle of the blade. The blade is a very dirty grey almost silver with deep grey metal encompassed over the top of both sides. You can see all the detail that went into this in terms of the line work and scratches on the exposed blade itself. The blade has definitely been used in battle as it has a real worn look about it. It’s a gigantic weapon and having it by Thanos’s side really helps to show off how truly big it is. You also can see the detail on his forearm pads as well. This is a heavy duty piece showing that Thanos really is the top bad guy in the Marvel Universe.
The back shows off the gold shoulder pads really well. Painted in almost a gold with copper colored undertone they are slightly raised to give it a look of armor. You can see from the back how the outfit is done in different colors. Light black, bluish grey. All of these tones make this stand out. By using paints and shades of all different colors it helps to make each and everything stand out. It gives it a layered look to add to the realism. You can also get a good idea of just how massive this piece is. In terms of depth and size. The armor is some of the most detailed work I have ever seen. For as tall and wide as this piece is looking at all the different shading, etching, and work that went into sculpting every small detail in this armor is a scope of which I have not seen before. I dig the placement of the legs as well. Having both feet firmly planted down yet bent back and forward respectfully this has a look as though it is actually moving. The arms out to their respective sides really show the with off as well from this angle.
Now lets look at this amazing base. It may just look like ruble at a glance but its actually the demolished “A” from the Avenger or Stark Tower. Grey, silver, black, and brown all blended perfectly together to create a stone and metal pile of destruction. You can see the “A” behind, and in some aspects under Thanos massive boot. I love how the outline of the “A” is silver yet the rest is almost rock like as its just been destroyed. Pieces of the big letter are scattered all over the base of this piece. Its incredibly well detailed with an absolutely insane amount of detail. Every crack and smashed piece is shaded and sculpted to look real. Throw in the fact that the base is the destroyed Avengers tower letter really adds symbolism to this piece. This is without a doubt the best base I have ever seen.
This is probably the most amazing piece I have ever seen from Diamond Select Toys. Their Marvel Milestones are all things of beauty but this is just 10 steps above anything they have ever done. If you’re a collector this is a must buy. If you’re a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe this is a must buy. Simply put this is a must buy. Pictures do not do it justice. It’s a big heavy piece that looks great wheverevr you put it. Now like the other Milestone statues this is limited. Only 1000 of these were made, and trust me when I say they will go fast. Pick one up now!
