The Hobgoblin is one of Spider-Man's enemies from Marvel Comics. He accidentally discovered the Green Goblin's secret hideout and modified the costume and weapons to become the next goblin villain in Spider-Man's life.
Hobgoblin clashed with the Green Goblin several times, and they both hate each other. Hobgoblin has joined such villain groups as the Sinister Six and the Sinister Seven.
Hobgoblin's true identity was kept a secret for a long time, until it was revealed to be Roderick Kingsley, a billionaire who owned a perfume company.
The current Hobgoblin is Phil Urich, the nephew of reporter Ben Urich who is a regular character in the Spider-Man and Daredevil series.
Roderick Kingsley returned and defeated Phil Urich. Phil Urich was allowed to continue being Hobgoblin if Kingsley got a cut of the profits that Urich made as Hobgoblin. Phil Urich was defeated by Superior Spider Man. Phil Urich joined Green Goblin and became Goblin Knight. Roderick Kingsley is the current Hobgoblin.
Hobgoblin was always way way cooler looking than the Green Goblin, added to the fact it took forever to find out who he was (at first) only added to the mystery surrounding him. Looking like an old school horror movie villain I have always been a huge fan. Kingsley was my favorite character to portray him but the costume always stayed the same. Diamond Select Toys has just released a limited edition resin Hobgoblin statue limited to 3000 pieces and it looks great. No matter who your favorite was this is a stand out piece.
Lets start off looking at the front. This is one bad ass evil looking statue. The mask is as spot on as you can get. The pale brown almost greyish yellow decayed color is so eye catching. Every little scratch and dent in the mask only makes it more evil. The shading of dark greys and light blacks in all the ridges and bends make it looks like a horrible demon, but if you really look to the right side you can see its simply the bad guys mask. They red eyes and red mouth even have a latex look when you look up close. I love how the eye hole area is a lighter, almost orange shade of red to give it contrast. The teeth are incredibly well done each one is made a dirty white almost grey color with black and brown scum like etching around each individual tooth. The entire mask is of course covered by the bright orange hood that, as you can see is very bright, yet completely tattered and wrinkled. Every single line in the hood is etched it to give it that weathered real look. The shading on the hood as well as cape and chest piece (Its all one piece of the costume) is so well done. Bright in most areas, but still shaded and scuffed in others. I just cant get over how well the mask is done.
Moving to the middle you can see the bright orange cloak that is designed to look weathered as well. As the head is tilted and bent, even the outfit follows the anatomically correct pattern by twisting and wrinkling to the side. And in each wrinkle is a slight variation of shading to give it just a bit more depth. The brown tattered belt and scratched across the chest is beautiful. A light brown leather color full of scratched and nicks all individually sculpted. Even the silver belt buckle stands out which is hard to do with the vibrant bright blue leggings and sleeves that are done almost like the skin of a snake. Each piece is bumped and bubbled and painted a bright blue with a touch of light blue and a hint of white here and there to make it not only bright but to give it that look of armor as well.
From the side we see the wrinkled orange boots on the foot holds of the glider as well as the orange glove. Quick note look at the back of the cloak you can see the top of the hood twisting in the wind fluffed out and scrunched up as well. Notice how my flash really reflects off this pain job. I have this one on display under light so you can really get that feel for how amazing it is. Now lets look at the tattered Spiderman costume. It’s ripped and shredded and missing pieces as its clutched in the Hobgoblins hand, which as you see has all the different fingers and thumb under the glove. The costume is spot on for Spiderman. Bright blue and red with the black webbing lines and bright white eye holes. This thing matching so perfectly its almost scary. The detail that went into this is incredible
Here is a quick shot of the glider. You can see its done in a dirty battle worn grey full of scrapes and dents. The two trademark horn are sticking up in full effect and the nose, and eye pieces are perfectly shaded a darker grey almost light black color to give it a more sunk in look. All the lines in the armor are exactly how they were in the comic book drawing and its lifted up and slightly to the side under the smoke design base to make it appear its flying. Even the boot straps are done perfectly covering the goblins orange boots.
Lets take a look at the cape from the back. Just like an old Halloween costume. Bright orange but full of rips and holes. Notice how the end is completely tattered and worn out as opposed to a smooth look. The wrinkles and flaps in the cape are all molded in and shaded a brown and black combination for the weathered out dirty look. It sticks straight out from the back as its flying in the wind. It’s a huge cap so have plenty of room to display this as it does stick out quiet a bit.
From the back (below the cape) you can see the rest of the orange and blue costume. You get a good look at the satchel that the Hobgoblin carries his pumpkin bombs in. It looks like a piece of real leather. Scuffed up and dirty a bright brown full of dark brown and black marking shaded into all the creases and folds. The buckle on it is a nice silver and it even has the black with silver button snap when the shoulder piece hooks. You can see the back of the boots are very worn and dirty no doubt from all the exhaust coming from the glider. The back is bent and you can see all the wrinkles where the back muscles would be twisting during flying.
The base is a cloud of smoke from the tail pipe of the glider. Its very well done. It’s a huge cloud of grey smoke but as you can see there are red, orange, and yellow blended under all the grey to show off the fire that illuminates from the engine. Its almost pure red coming out but filters throughout the huge cloud turning the pure smoke color of black and grey in the front. It’s a great base for a great statue making it not only all one big piece but really making it look as if its flying.
The Hobgoblin has always been one of the coolest designs in comic books. He’s definitely one of Spiderman’s greatest villains and this amazing statue give him the treatment he deserves. As I states only 3000 of these were made so grab them while you can. Its one of the best pieces you can have in your collection
