Old Man Logan is an alternative version of the Marvel Comics character Wolverine. This character is an aged version of Wolverine set in an alternate future universe designated Earth-807128, where the supervillains overthrew the superheroes. Introduced as a self-contained story arc within the Wolverine ongoing series by writer Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven, it's also the basis of the Logan film.
Although Wolverine is an ok character to me I never went out of my way to read of collect his comics. His first solo mini series was good, but I never got the appeal of it. I enjoyed the live action X-Men films probably more than I did the books. One comic storyline I really loved however was Old Man Logan. Setting the story of Wolverine long retired and into the future. It heavily inspired the final live action Wolverine film Logan, which was one of the best superhero films ever made in my opinion. I have several Wolverine statues and figures in my collection so I was more than happy to hear that Diamond Select Toys had made a limited edition Old Man Logan Statue.
Looking at the face you can see it’s a dead ringer for the comic book. Old, grey, and giving his trademark sneer, this is bad ass from the start. The hair is meticulously etched to look real. It’s the classic mutton chop style sideburns that this time connect. As you can see the mustache is gone now. His hair is slicked back and grey like his beard. Its comic style but very well done as it combines grey, black, and a hint of white to give it a realistic look. The sculpting that went into the lines in the forehead and around the eyes is breath taking to say the least. Combine the frown with the slanted down grey eyebrows and just a touch of shading around the eye lids and this really has a menacing look about it. I love how the eyes are the cold steel blue color. It really does feel like it’s looking at you. Logan may be old now but he still has a wonderful tan that you can see in the skin tones. This piece has a look of determination on it that’s almost frightening. You also get a great look at how well the brown leather jacket looks. Sculpted to give it a wrinkled look then painted and shaded to make it appear very worn out. It’s a nice combination of various browns and blacks that really does look like real leather. Throw in the tan collar and it really pops. The grey shirt underneath tucked into the jeans give it a classic old Clint Eastwood look. And you can see that Logan is still very muscular.
Looking at the body you can see what a beast this is. The muscles explode from underneath this thing. Wearing a pair of wrinkled blue jeans with a few accents of black this is the classic look, and as it’s the comic book style to a “T” Even though they are more pale type colors this statue really stands out. I really can’t get over how overly muscular it is done. Every muscle in the body is popping out in full effect from under the clothing . The jacket, as you can see it complete with zipper. You can see how the other fist is clenched as well as the claws are fully extending ready to draw blood. The right hand is normal and simply left open. I really cant get over how well the sculpting in the jeans is done. Fully wrinkled and bunched just like a real pair. The shading and painting is done remarkably as well. In fact the entire outfit, especially under the lights looks real.
This side shot gives you a good look at the claws. You can see the sleeve of the jacket has a slight wrinkle around the wrist area where the arm is drawn back. You can see the three claws coming from the knuckles. They look great. Silver adamantium that’s got a hint of speckled painted inside to really make it shine. The positioning of the arms and claws is the key to this piece and these are done great. The right arm hanging down with an open hand, with the left fully extended with the claws coming out is classic Wolverine. The claws are his trademark and these really hit a home run. The fact the knuckles have the adamantium showing really adds to the gritty feel. Like I said I loved the Old Man Logan story and this is a dead ringer for the drawing.
The base is the snow that Logan is standing in. It looks real. White, but not overly bright to make it look like a cartoon, no this is white, grey, and hints of black all complied together to make it look real. I love the shading in spots to give it an iced over look. Everything is uneven like a real snowfall. You can see the rocks from the mountain area in full effect to add a bit of depth. Part of it still sticking up from the snow, the other part lying flat with snow covering it up. The snow looks fresh. You can actually picture it snowing when you look at this. I love all the little rocks and debris buried under the base and painted over to make it look more real. This is a classy base that really adds to the feel of the piece itself.
This is a great wolverine statue. As I keep stressing I loved the Old Man Logan storyline, it’s always been my favorites. This one really captures the anger and sadness of the storyline. The entire design is just amazing and Diamond Select has done another masterful job at putting out another must own Marvel Statue. Pick this one up today, but hurry he’s very limited and moving fast.
