In an alternate reality, Miles Morales follows in the footsteps of the slain Peter Parker to become the masked Super Hero known as Spider-Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider. At first he wants no part of the superhero life, but when he watches the Green Goblin kill Spiderman (Peter Parker) he is wrecked with guilt for not helping. At that moment he decides to become the new Spider Man. Splitting his time between fighting crime and managing his teenage personal life, Morales has to hide his identity from his parents, but confides in his best friend and other trustworthy members of the Super Hero community. Where the original Spider-Man lived by his Uncle Ben's maxim, "With great power comes great responsibility," Miles Morales adds the addendum, "What would Peter Parker do?"
I dig Miles Morales. Sure I prefer Peter Parker, but that’s because I grew up with him. Replacing, or in this case sort of changing a hero like Spiderman is next to impossible to do, but Marvel pulled it off when they introduced us to Miles Morales. A likeable character in every sense of the word. In fact as I type this I’m watching my son play the new PS5 Miles Morales Spiderman game. Diamond Select Toys has been making amazing Spiderman statues and figures for years so its no shock they added Miles Morales to the mix as well. This piece is actually my third Miles statue and it’s a winner.
Lets start at the top. Like the original costume it’s a wrap around outfit with webs and a spider. You can see the big oversized white eye lids surrounded in a dark red outline. The eyes are a bright white, with just a slight hint of grey for shading to give it a touch of depth. Notice how the red outlines around he eyes are done to match the red webbing design. That’s the definition of wrap around right there. One of the things I really loved that Diamond Select did was have the red webbing designs etched into the piece. Instead of simply being painted on the webbing is all etched in then painted that bright red. It’s a fantastic touch and really helps to make this piece stand out. The other thing that I really cant explain is how this thing really looks like its staring at you. I mean the eyes are just big and white, but the slight turn of the head really makes it almost come to life. You can tell that miles is smaller than Peter Parker but the way the statue is done is simply fantastic. Although designed to be skinny, you can still see every muscle underneath the outfit itself, giving it a ripped look.
Moving to the body you can see the bright red is in full effect, and all of the little webbing is carved into the piece and painted deep red as opposed to overly bright to give it a nice element of perception. The black itself is bright and vibrant, and let’s not forget to mention the red spider in the center. This matches the comic book perfectly. Plus I love how it is done. Whereas the webbing is sculpted in and painted red the spider on the chest is molded to stick out. Still painted the same bright red but the fact it is elevated out really makes it pop. The red design, which is basically a thick bold red lightning style design is elevated as well. I also love all the definition used in the sculpting. Notice the rib area, you can see all the muscles sculpted in. You can get a feel of that by the neck and legs as well. It’s a comic book style by its done to match the human body perfectly. I still prefer the red and black original outfit, but this is very cool.
The back shows off big red spider in the outfit as well as the shading and muscle structure. You can see its black, but with very minimal lighter shades done to accentuate certain parts of the statue. The spider on the back is a bright red just like in the books, and you can see all of the sculpted muscles running throughout the back and legs of Spiderman. The placement and positioning used really brings this to life, and give you the full feeling of Spiderman is busy fighting crime. This is a very comic accurate piece to say the least. You can see by the lighting I used how bright the red is in this. Combined with the fact its sculpted to look incredibly lean and muscular this really stands out. Throw in the bright red mixed with the sleek back and this is a two color piece that will still shine amongst other more colorful statues in your collection
The base is very unique to say the least, and also very long. Its two buildings with webbing in between them. The buildings are essentially pieces of wall. The wall section on the left actually has a few windows in it to separate it from the more plain right side. It’s the webbing however that is the meat of the base. Done in a white and grey with just slight hints of black this looks like a real spiders web would. You can see all the little lines sculpted in to give it a webbed look. Plus the shading and coloring really make it look real. Throw in the fact his hand is resting on a bent lamp and you have a winner Its very long so you will need a bit of room for it. I have the one they did just like this with Peer Parker so I have mine on opposite ends of a shelf.
You can see this is a very well done and detailed piece that really does Spiderman justice. It captures the look and feel of the comics perfectly. Fans of Miles and Spiderman in general will definitely want to add this one to their collection.
