In an alternate reality, Miles Morales follows in the footsteps of the slain Peter Parker to become the masked Super Hero known as Spider-Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider. At first he wants no part of the superhero life, but when he watches the Green Goblin kill Spiderman (Peter Parker) he is wrecked with guilt for not helping. At that moment he decides to become the new Spider Man
Splitting his time between fighting crime and managing his teenage personal life, Morales has to hide his identity from his parents, but confides in his best friend Ganke and other trustworthy members of the Super Hero community. Where the original Spider-Man lived by his Uncle Ben's maxim, "With great power comes great responsibility," Miles Morales adds the addendum, "What would Peter Parker do?"
Replacing a comic book character is a next to impossible task. Introducing a new character can also be hard as unfortunately for every hit there are 50 misses. Creating a new character and origin and having him go by another heroes identity is something that never works. Except once. That someone is Miles Morales, the new Spiderman. Normally I would crap all over that as I am a huge Spidey fan, but I do enjoy Miles. He’s actually one of Marvels best characters. And now I can have him share a spot on my wall alongside Peter Parker because Diamond Select Toys has just released a limited edition Miles Morales Spider Man resin statue.
Here he is and he’s a perfect match. Spiderman in the Miles Morales design. Come to think of it, with the exception of a few tweaks here and there, this costume has pretty much remained the same, its just a color change. Like the original costume it’s a wrap around outfit but let’s start by looking at the head You can see the big oversized white eye lids surrounded in a dark red outline. The eyes are a bright white, with just a slight hint of black for shading to give it a touch of depth. Notice how the red outlines around he eyes are done to match the red webbing design. That’s the definition of wrap around right there.
The bright red is in full effect, and all of the little webbing is carved into the piece and painted deep red as opposed to overly bright to give it a nice element of perception. The black itself is bright and vibrant and if you look you can see the faint hints of light black painted in it for shading purposes. And let’s not forget to mention the red spider in the center. This matches the comic book perfectly. I also love all the definition used in the sculpting. Notice the rib area, you can see all the muscles sculpted in. You can get a feel of that by the neck and legs as well. It’s a comic book style by its done to match the human body perfectly. I still prefer the red and black original outfit, but this is very cool. In fact its leaps and bounds better than the old black and white venom look.
Here’s a side shot of the over dramatic knotted up web that I like so much. You can see it flows through Spidey’s hand going around the his wrist and twists and turns all the way past the statue. Fully knotted like rope more so than a spider web. Its painted in a white with just a hint of light blue mixed in. It’s the most eye catching piece of the statue. Not so much that it’s the main point you focus on, but it really brings it to life and exemplifies how important Spiderman’s webs are in the fight against crime. The fact the hand, wrapped in red webbing design around the fingers is sticking out only adds to the coolness of the statue
The back shows off big red spider in the outfit as well as the shading and muscle structure. You can see its black, but with very minimal lighter shades done to accentuate certain parts of the statue. The spider on the back is a bright red just like in the books, and you can see all of the sculpted muscles running throughout the back and legs of Spiderman. The placement and positioning used really bring this to life, and give you the full feeling of Spiderman is busy fighting crime. This is a very comic accurate piece to say the least, and that something I have not touched on. Miles is a kid basically, where as Peter, although a high school student when we met him, was always designed as an adult. The Miles Statue is clearly done to be a smaller style Spiderman, and that is really what helps set it apart.
The base is a simple bunching of rock that are a combination of grey and black colors. Its incredibly scuffed up and dirty looking yet still bright enough to maintain the comic book look. It’s a small base size wise to take nothing away from the piece itself. You can even see the webbing Spiderman used throughout the bottom of the base. It’s a great addition to the statue as we all picture Spiderman shooting webbing, and with the massive amount on this base it fully captures that.
You can see this is a very well done and detailed piece that really does Spiderman justice. It captures the look and feel of the comics perfectly. Fans of Miles and Spiderman in general will definitely want to add this one to their collection. Pick one up today. It is limited to 3000 pieces so act fast.
