Midtown High School student Peter Benjamin Parker is a science-whiz orphan living with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. He is bitten by a radioactive spider at a science exhibit and "acquires the agility and proportionate strength of an arachnid". Along with heightened athletic abilities, Parker gains the ability to adhere to walls and ceilings. Through his native knack for science, he develops a gadget that lets him fire adhesive webbing of his own design through small, wrist-mounted barrels. Initially seeking to capitalize on his new abilities, Parker dons a costume and, as "Spider-Man", becomes a novelty television star. However, "He blithely ignores the chance to stop a fleeing thief, and his indifference ironically catches up with him when the same criminal later robs and kills his Uncle Ben." Spider-Man tracks and subdues the killer and learns, in the story's next-to-last caption, "With great power there must also come—great responsibility!"
I love Spidey. Granted he’s not my favorite hero, that’s Batman, but he’s one of the most enduring heroes in all of comic books. His origin is inspiring, and although a few tweaks here and there have been made in terms of bringing him into more of a modern era the majority of the heart has stayed the same. Diamond Select Toys has done a wide variety of Spiderman busts, statues, and figures, and yes I own a lot of them. This new one not only has the pumpkin bombing going on in full effect but it has a neat little latch on the back so you can mount it to your wall. Throw in the fact it looks great, and you now have a wall mounted Spiderman statue
Spiderman in the classic design. Come to think of it, with the exception of a few tweaks here and there, this costume has pretty much remained the same. Red, white, blue, and black. As I said it’s a very wrap around outfit but let’s start by looking at the head You can see the big oversized white eye lids surrounded in a dark black outline. The eyes are a bright white, with just a slight hint of black for shading to give it a touch of depth. Notice how the black outlines around he eyes are think whereas the rest of the black used for the webbing design throughout the costume is more skinny. It’s a nice little touch to show off both outline that use the same color. The bright red is on in full effect, and all of the little webbing is carved into the piece and painted black to give it a nice element of perception. The blue is bright and vibrant and if you look you can see the faint hints of light black painted in it for shading purposes.
Here is a better shot of the body. You can see the detail that went into to sculpting this especially if you look at the right ribcage. Notice all the muscles that were sculpted to give Spiderman that classic chiseled comic book look. You can see it in the legs as well as the shoulders. This is a highly detailed statue body wise. Every muscle is sculpted to really show off the depth and design. The costume is the classic spider man look, red, blue, and black. I really enjoy how the black is etched it. All the web designs are etched into the piece as opposed to simply being painted in. Throw in the classic spider on the chest being sculpted to stick out and you have a great deal of depth in this piece. The placement is fantastic as well as you can see how the left leg is drawn back yet still flying out.
This side shot gives you a good look at these little pumpkin bombs blowing up around Spiderman. Fully detailed just like their comic book counterparts. Orange, with the lines carved in to look exactly like a real pumpkin. The evil black mouth and eyes are carved in, and to make them even more ominous they are outlined in a bright yet still very deep green. There are five of those little guys flying around Spiderman and they all look great. You can see the finger placement on Spiderman’s fingers as it appears he is ready to shoot a web to escape this onslaught. You can also see the head placement from this side. His head is almost fully extended out as he does have a bunch of pumpkin bombs going off behind them. It almost gives this piece a sense of urgency to escape.
Here is the back. Notice the little hole cut in the back. I used a normal screw and it slid right into place. You also get a great look at how this smoke looks. A combination of grey with white, and black mixed into it. Puffing out very large in the back, no doubt where a bomb just exploded and the back is almost the mushroom blast. It really does look like a giant cloud the way it is all designed. Everything connects and everything grows from small too big to small to big in no real order. It’s a very realistic looking blast. Don’t worry it is designed just right so it does lay flush against your wall. The placing of Spiderman to essentially be sitting on this works great as it does look like he is swinging away from a massive explosion.
There is no base as this is just a wall mount piece. Don’t worry if you don’t want to put a hole in your wall you can see how easily its rests on the ground in these shots. If you’re a Spiderman fan you will want this for your collection. If your simply a comic book reader and like collecting these pieces just like I do this is another must have for your collection. I only wish it would have been a bit larger. Other than that its another fantastic piece from Diamond Select Toys.
