Based on one of Stephen King's bestselling novels, IT is a story told in flashbacks. In a small town, a group of children are terrorized in their youth by an evil force in the form of a clown named Pennywise (played by Tim Curry). Thirty years later, when they learn of a new series of child murders, they return to see if they can't stop it once and for all. Adults now, with success in diverse careers, they still must come to terms with their pasts and with the evil that stalks their New England home town, and their own fears and nightmares.
As you can see that synopsis is all about the original IT. The TV miniseries that to this day is still amazing. Tim Curry gave a be all end all performance as Pennywise, and when the IT film was announced the vast majority of fans were outraged saying no one could top his performance. Diamond Select Toys has released a plethora of IT merchandise based on the new films, but now they have released a new statue of Pennywise in the form of the original Tim Curry version.
This is a creepy ass statue. No its not the demonic evil style like the new one, this is a traditional evil clown. Some would say the inspiration for evil clowns. Look at that face. White, with just a faded touch of blue around the cheek areas. Its painted to look just like clown makeup. You can see the dome shaped head which is clearly a bald cap with the clown style red hair. I personally enjoy how the brows are sculpted up but there is only one eyebrow. Painted in black and aimed up it looks haunting considering the fact the right side has no eyebrow. Only the deep molding of the raised forehead. The eyes are a creepy deep yellow with red center that match the look of the original character perfectly. There is a smear of pink almost faded purple paint under the right eye and a hint of that under the bottom lip as well. The cheeks are sculpted to show the pushing up of the eyes with frown lines molded in. And right in the center is a big red clown nose that has touches of make up underneath it from smearing. The mouth is the truly eye catching part as you can see the warped looking teeth and tongue inside the blood soaked lips. I mentioned the hair before and you can see this looks just like a clown wig. Its sculpted to show off the hair lines but in the same sense done to look just like a wig. Throw in the fact it looks exactly like Tim Curry did in the original film and you has a spot on likeness. The faded blue used for shading adds a nice touch as well not only bringing the face to life but adding a nice amount of contrast as well. You also get a good look at the neck of the clown costume. Ruffled white, that’s shaded to look dirty with a nice combination of bright purple and teal after that followed by another layer of dirty white ruffles. Something to point out is how well Diamond Select does their colors. The face is white, and the ruffled neck area of the costume is white, but they look totally different and never blend together.
Moving down the body you see the big oversized clown outfit. A teal and purple paisley design of what appears to be the vest, or little top jacket perhaps that evolves into the giant baggy wrinkled arms. The arms are a straight design of teal and purple done to look not only baggy like a typical clown outfit but if you look at them you can seen every wrinkle has been sculpted in to make it look like actual fabric. The little jacket, with the paisley style design is lined in a deep red color that matches the three big red puff balls going down the center of the outfit. The balls look great as they really do have a fuzzy, worn out look about them. If you look close you can even see the slit where the outfit buttons up. The outfit itself is a filthy dark yellow with shades of orange and faded black to give it not only a creepy look, but a dirty look as well. Every line is molded into the outfit and its sculpted full of wrinkles. It looks amazing. The fact that it is such a perfect match is almost scary. This looks like a giant baggy clown outfit that’s not only evil, but just unkempt.
The side shot really shows off those sleeves that look fantastic. I like how they are crisp and bright and not worn out like the rest of the outfit. It really makes them pop out even more. Baggy, bulged up, and wrinkled throughout they look fantastic. The colors are great and they have almost a shine to them if you will. I mean under this light you can really see how they almost look like silk or rayon. Take notice of Pennywise’s hand. Its burning, as I am to assume this is based on when the Losers Club is fighting him and he has just been hit with Beverly’s silver earring. As in the movie his glove came off and you could see his hand is actually a three fingered claw. This looks just like that claw from the film. Dark brown close to a black color with a touch of gold almost like its ready to explode into a ball of fire and light. This is uncanny how much it looks like the original version.
The back gives you a good look at a lot of different things. The big puffy wavy clown hair. Red with black shading to make it look like a real puffy wig. I always like how Curry’s Pennywise had a dome shaped head. This does as well. Like a thick egg with hair. You can see the ruffled collar and you get a great look at the jacket. Its paisley like I said before but in the same sense it has a flower style about it. Its really ass ugly, but that’s exactly how it looked in the original miniseries. The combination of white, purple, and black all blend well together to create the pattern, and the red lining really makes it all pop out. You also get a good look at the baggy pants, which as you can see are all wrinkled and blown out on the back as well. You also get a good look at the smoke rising up around the legs.
Speaking of the smoke its in full view on this base. Pennywise in the original, and in some instances the new version is a giant spider like creature. During the final battle the Losers Club when they are adults Pennywise reveals his true form. The battle takes place in the sewer, and this base incorporates all of those things. The base itself is a dark grey almost black piece of concrete from the sewer itself. You can see the yellow foggy style smoke, which is done in a blown glass sort of way, bellowing out from below. And right in the middle of the smoke are the giant spider legs. Crusty, ridged, and gross, just like in the film. A combination of yellow, brown, black and grey. They resemble more of an alien bug like Starship Troopers as opposed to a traditional spider which only adds to the horror factor. I love how the legs are coming out but still arching down in a point touching the floor. This is a hell of a base and it really is eye catching. I like how it was able to incorporate both parts of the miniseries as well as both Pennywise the Clown and the spider form as well as the sewer battle. It really bring the entire piece not only full circle but to life as well.
This is a must have for IT fans, and horror fans alike. I have this one sitting with my other Pennywise statues. It’s a definite must have for collectors and fans alike. I’m really glad the original Pennywise is getting some love, and I’m thrilled Diamond Select is the company to do it. Pick this one up today.
