The Predator is a fictional extraterrestrial species featured in the Predator science-fiction franchise, characterized by its trophy hunting of other species for sport. First introduced in 1987 as the main antagonist of the film Predator, the Predator creatures returned in the sequels Predator 2 (1990), Predators (2010) and The Predator (2018), as well as the crossover films Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007). This particular version of the predator I will be reviewing is base doff of his appearance in Predator 2.
Here is an unpopular opinion I have. Predator 2 is better than Predator. Yes I said it, and I mean it. Predator 2 is much more action packed, and the setting of Los Angles is fantastic. We see the Predator in a train, in the parks, in the city, its much more exciting to me. Plus the action level is cranked all the way up. From the violent gang shoot out in the beginning to Danny Glover battling the Predator throughout the city and finally to his ship, this one never slows down. It really is my favorite off all the predator films, and now Diamond Select is releasing a predator statue based off of the second film.
Starting at the head let’s look at his mask. Completely covered with an almost red tint, that could be from cloaking, but I prefer to think blood of a no dead hunter is completely battle damaged with etched in eye visors. It’s a great combination of greys, and blacks, and a rust like red with just a touch of shine to it to give it that finished metallic look, yet still look filthy. You can see where its sculpted by where the Predators jaw outline would be as well as having the block in the front. Hanging from the helmet is the Predators black dreadlocks which are wrapped together in gold ties at the top and again towards the bottom. They are coming out of the copper colored opening in the helmet, and like the rest of him are covered in a blood red tint. It’s a dead ringer for its film counterpart, and the slight turn of the head really makes it look ominous. The shoulder armor although covered a bit in this shot is a great touch as well.
Moving down a bit you can see the classic half armored, half netted costume. If you look close you can see under the netting the Predator’s markings are painted on the skin on the right side under the chest and down the stomach. The netting looks fantastic, and I like how you can see slight variations of the Predators muscles under it. The Predator is of course an alien so his skin color is different than ours. It’s a combination of brown, faint orange and touches of white. Its snake like skin and this captures it perfectly. The necklace actually hangs down as it’s a real necklace. It’s a cool touch to do it that way as it really makes it stand out. The leather style brown codpiece that blends into the brownish grey quad armor, and is perfectly detailed right down to the buckle. You can see how all the armor on the outfit matches from this shot. It’s a great looking piece. You can also see to go along with the theme of a fresh kill, which I will get to in a minute, this is also full of a faint blood type tint.
Here is the shot that makes me think this statue is blood soaked. You can see the mighty predators armored hand reaching to the shy holding the head and spine of his fallen prey. Each finger is individually sculpted and covered in blood as he’s clutching the spine, that’s also completely skinned and drenched in blood. This head and spine of absolutely incredible to see. Every bone, and fragment are sculpted to perfection. You can chips, and cracks and lines throughout. The head is a head with no skin, but you see all the jaw features, eyes, cheeks, you name it. As there is no skin its simply blood drenched. And as its aimed above the Predators head I simply assume all the blood has drained down, thus drenching him and turning him an almost red color.
This side shot gives you a good look at one of the Predators main weapons, his claws. The forearm piece of the weapon is sculpted to show the alien technology used to make this weapon of death. Every marking is etched in and shaded and it really looks like it could be real. Its strapped on right under the brown leather arm bands. The blades stick out past the knuckles and are sculpted to give them a very rugged etched look as opposed to a sleek blade style. If you look at the shoulder area of the skin you can see some of the black dots in the skin as well as an almost scaling look around the biceps, hence the snake comparison. I also like the subtle touch of having the hand clenched into a fist as it gives the impression that your about to be stabbed by the blades. To make matter worse for the victim you can see the Predator is also clutching his spear like weapon. I love the design on this as well. Its clearly made of some type of alien metal, but the design itself looks almost like bone. You can see every vent and shaft in the weapon sculpted to perfection. You can even see the alien style designs in the handle. And like the rest of the piece its covered in a red like tint.
The back view really shows off a lot of the little details that went into this piece. You get a great view of the black dreadlocks with the gold banding as well as silver and red as well. Looking towards the bottom you can see the back flap on the predators cod piece. Painted to look exactly like scratched up leather. It’s a great look of different shades of brown. Fully etched with cracks throughout it really has an old worn out look. It’s a great touch and it really does look identical to a real piece of leather. Unlike the jungle outfit the back of this one features a great amount of armor on the back connected to the shoulder.
The base is really neat. Its simply a rooftop perch. Dirty gold, almost copper you can see all the pillar designs and outlines sculpted throughout. Its done to emulate the classic scene in the second film where the Predator is on the perch howling into the night sky. Its done to be very dirty , almost filthy. With scuffs and scratches throughout. You can also get a good look at the Predator’s foot. With leather knee pads underneath the armor as well as the armor plating by the toes it flows perfectly. You can even see the black toenails in his feet. This is just good quality from top to bottom.
This is a fantastic piece to add to your collection. I love the fact that Diamond Select has made this awesome original style Predator. I can only hope they make a few of the other style ones we have seen throughout the course of the films. This is a must own and one that needs to be displayed Front and Center. Go buy one right away
