The Scarecrow is a fictional supervillain appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, he made his debut in World's Finest Comics #3. The self-proclaimed "Master of Fear" is an ex-professor of psychology in Gotham City who uses a variety of experimental toxins to exploit the phobias of his victims. He is one of the most enduring enemies of the superhero Batman and belongs to the collective of adversaries that make up the Dark Knight's rogues gallery.
The Scarecrow is a weird villain to say the least. A crazy skinny doctor who uses fear gas to drive his enemies insane. He dresses like an old scarecrow, hence his personas name. He is a classic Batman villain but thanks to his roles in a few of the new video games he is rising to prominence once again. Diamond Select Toys has been churning out a ton of Batman statues in recent months, and they have now added the Scarecrow to that growing list. And I will just say up front he looks great.
Here he is, a big old scarecrow. Literally. A skinny tall old scarecrow, which is exactly how Johnathan Crane dresses. Lets look at his head. It’s a burlap sack. A tan color, almost faded brown if you will. Holes are cut out for his eyes, which if you look close you can see his eyes as well as some of the skin around them under the two holes. The mouth is also simply cut out in a jagged Halloween pumpkin style. I really love how on the mouth little pieces are sculpted in to give it that feel that the material is dangling and ripped, as this head cover really does look like a burlap sack. Its sculpted to look like a real bag over the head. Mangled, wrinkled, and off center in every sense of the word. Its hangs down a bit past the neck line, and is tied in place by a rope. Which as you can see looks like a real dirty rope. Tan and brown, with the left side having a lot of faded black painted in to give it a real used almost filthy look. It all blends into the shoulder piece which is again just a tattered piece of drop cloth. That piece has an almost dusty look about it. Of course the topper is the giant brimmed tall hat. The hat itself is also a faded out brown color with a rope tied around the end of the top piece. You can see that under that hat all the markings and lines are sculpted in giving it the look of being a simple cloth style hat. I like how this is essentially one color, but the different shading used helps keep it all separate.
The body is a tattered brown and tan drop cloth style piece as well. Brown, black, tan, even a faint hint of yellow and orange all combined to make this outfit look like a real piece of burlap and plastic. Its filthy like a real scarecrow would be out in the field and held together by rope. The rope looks great as its done to have stings hanging about in different areas. That combined with the shadowing used throughout you would swear this is really being tied together with real rope. You can see all the big thick stitching lines at the bottom of the piece as well. The arms are done the same but sculpted to look bunched up. The hands are thin and long and cloaked in a faded tan glove. This almost has a Frankenstein type vibe to it the way the hands are placed. I really have to give Diamond Select Toys all the credit in the world as this is essentially a two color outfit, but the shading and blending keep everything looking separate.
This side shot shows you the handle of the pitchfork the Scarecrow carries around. It a traditional wooden one like farmers would place in their scarecrows hands. I love the detail that went into it. A very yellow colored brown if you will. Its all warped and not even close to being straight. Its full of scratches and indents much like a real piece of wood would be. The fact that it is so crooked and twisted gives it the impression it is a real piece of wood that was simply carved into the shape of a pitchfork. The fingers wrapped around the handle are fantastic. Long, thin and narrow. Keep in mind Johnathan Crane is not an imposing individual, so his hands nor body are going to be big in any way. Notice how the fingers are individually done and with the placement of the body it not only looks like he’s holding the pitchfork but using it to balance himself as well.
The base is a small piece of land. Dirt, rocks, some type of toxic like spill all surrounded in the back by fence posts strung with barbed wire. The farmhouse style setting works great with this piece, as does the green slime to give it a more frightening sense. The barbed wire is a great touch and it looks great as well. Every strand is perfectly detailed as is the old rickity wood. The rocks along the side in the front blend in perfectly. It's a full base aside from the green but it works as everything blends together perfectly.
This is yet another fantastic piece to add to your Batman collection, or statue collection in general. It looks exactly like it's comic book counterpart and it will look great with your other pieces. Pick one up today.
