Scorpion is a playable character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise by Midway Games/NetherRealm Studios. Making his debut as one of the original seven playable characters in Mortal Kombat in 1992, he is an undead ninja specter seeking revenge for his death at the hands of Quan Chi. One of the franchise's signature characters, Scorpion has been playable in nearly every Mortal Kombat fighting game, except for the original version of Mortal Kombat 3. He has represented the series in crossover fighting games and in guest roles in other games, while appearing in various official series merchandise and alternate media
I’ve always enjoyed playing as Scorpion in the Mortal Kombat games. The signature “Get over here!” yell before the throws his Kunai, the harpoon like weapon from his wrist to not only stab his opponent but use it to pull him back over to him so he can unleash a move on the now groggy victim. I play between Him and Sub Zero most of the time. I have been playing since the inception of the franchise (I actually have the cabinet in my office) and still play to this day. Plus lets face it Scorpion is s ninja, and you must use ninjas when you play games like this. Diamond Select has already done an amazing job with Sub Zero and now its time to add Scorpion to the mix with the amazing resin bust.
Let’s zoom in right on the head. This thing is amazing. Jet black mask / hood with the bright yellow mouth piece. It looks just like a real ninja hood as well as you can see in this close up all the stitching lines etched into the black hood as well as where the seams would be on the bottom and sides. It’s amazing all the little work that went into this. Everything looks great the choice of a deep smooth black is really good as it helps to showcase the bright deep yellow for the face mask. Before I mention that mask look at the detail in the forehead and eyes. That part is open just like an actual ninja mask would be. You can see the deep slanted eyebrows giving it a very evil and menacing stare. The forehead is sculpted into a frown with the indent sculpted between the eyes. Throw in the almost pale white eyes and you have one evil looking piece. They eyes look great. White and very faded it even has the little white dot in the pupil to add to the overall look of the piece. The flesh color is perfect and shaded under the eyes to really enhance the stare, Moving to the mask you can see it’s a bright, although not overly done yellow face piece with a black vented mouth area just like in the games. The sculpting of the vents is perfect. You can see every little detail of the mesh which is a combination of black and grey giving it a real worn look. I really love the detail that went into the vents. You can see each one is perfectly sculpted. Throw in a few scuffs and scrapes done with various forms of light black shading and this face plate looks like its taken a few hits.
Moving down a bit you can see the top of the chest. Notice all the wrinkles in the black hood. The hood is clearly supposed to be some type of spandex and this looks exactly as it should. Layer after overlapping layer ruffle down from the neck and every single wrinkle is sculpted to look like real cloth. Shaded with two variations of black this looks amazing. The sides are done in a more traditional karate uniform collar and you can see all the stitching and lines as well. The shoulder is the bright yellow section almost like padding that matches the yellow face mask. As its also supposed to be a thicker style of cloth material you can see all the sewing lines and triangle style markings sculpted into it. Using the variation of yellow with shadings of deep black and orange in all the lines and etching you really do get a padded look for it. I love how they were able to use the orange shading for the etching to make it looks totally different. This is one amazing piece to say the least.
The back shows off all the sculpting in the hood and shoulder pads. You can see how the entire hood is sculpted with the stitching and the shoulder piece is all done to look quilt like if you will. The combination of yellow and orange with the shading thrown in is just spectacular to me. This is a resin piece but because of the sculpting, shading and etching it really and truly does look like padded material and spandex. The amount of work that went into this is mind boggling. Scorpion is a great looking character and this piece matches him to a “T”
Finally let’s look at this base. Like most busts it sets on a pillar design. However as you can see this one is very unique This is designed to be a big explosion of fire similar to when Scorpion appears in the games when he teleports.. It’s beautiful. It’s completely done in crystal style. Yellow, orange, hints of light black, all mixed together to give it a really sharp look that really does look like fire. A giant blast almost like a jagged mushroom cloud that goes every which way like an explosion. I Love how it is sculpted to be ridged, and disproportioned. It goes every which way in not rhyme or reason . This is a detail you don’t see from other companies, and one of the many things that sets Diamond Select apart.
If you’re a Mortal Kombat fan you will no doubt want to buy this. If you dig Ninja’s and cool busts you will want it as well. It’s an amazing piece, but be warned there are only 1000 of these made so order now before they are gone.
Overall 5 out of 5 Stars!
