The original Sub-Zero, called Bi-Han, was introduced in the first game (1992), in which he participates in the eponymous tournament as he was ordered by the Lin Kuei to kill the host and take his treasure. He’s a ninja dressed in blue and black that is able to freeze his opponents, and in later games make Ice weapons, and throw ice to hurt his opponents as well. There have been a few different Sub-Zero’s over the course of the long running game franchise all keeping the same look with various origins. This particular statue is based off the original.
Sub-Zero is my favorite Mortal Kombat character. He has been since the very first game. I have decimated people using him for the last 18 years. He’s also one of the coolest looking characters, with the most interesting of backstories. I mean he’s a ninja who shoots ice. What’s not to love. There is not a video game player around who would not want a big Sub-Zero statue by their game systems. Well now thanks to Diamond Select Toys you can have just that. Behold the beauty of the Sub-Zero Statue!
Let’s zoom in right on the head. This thing is amazing. A spot on replica if there ever was one. Deep blue mask with a light black hood. It looks just like a real ninja hood as well as you can see in this close up all the stitching lines etched into the black hood as well as where the seams would be on the bottom and sides. It’s amazing all the little work that went into this. Everything looks great the choice of a lighter black is really good as it helps to showcase the bright deep blue for the face mask. Before I mention that mask look at the detail in the forehead and eyes. That part is open just like an actual ninja mask would be. You can see the deep slanted eyebrows giving it a very evil and menacing stare. The forehead is sculpted into a frown with the indent sculpted between the eyes. Throw in the bright blue eyes and you have one evil looking piece. They eyes look great. White blue and black it even has the little white dot in the pupil to add to the overall look of the piece. The flesh color is perfect and shaded under the eyes to really enhance the stare, Moving to the mask you can see it’s a bright, although not overly done blue face piece covering the mouth area just like in the games. The sculpting of the mask is perfect. You can see every little detail of the mesh which is a combination of black and grey and completely molded and etched to show the lining of the material.
Moving towards the body you can see how great this looks. Notice all the wrinkles in the costume. The hood is clearly supposed to be cloth and this looks exactly as it should. Layer after overlapping layer ruffle down from the neck and every single wrinkle is sculpted to look like real cloth. Shaded with two variations of black this looks amazing. The black outfit itself is done in a more traditional karate uniform collar and you can see all the stitching and lines as well. The shoulder and lower section is the blue section which is done almost like padding that matches the blue in the face mask. As its also supposed to be a thicker style of cloth material you can see all the sewing lines and triangle style markings sculpted into it. Using the variation of blue with shadings of black in all the lines and etching you really do get a padded look for it. I love how they were able to use the exact same colors and etching it looks totally different. This is one amazing piece to say the least.
Her is the left side shot. As you can see Sub-Zero is launching his big ice attack, and it is big. This picture does not do it justice. This is a large piece in itself, but this ice blast is huge. Firing out on every side you can see its layer after layer of ice with a huge tip shooting out of the direct center. I absolutely love how this is painted. It looks like real ice. The painting on this is second to none. Its white and blue, but different variations of blue. Notice how the center is a dark blue that fades into more of a light blue, then finally and faded white as you get closer to the tips. You can see every single crack and crystal inside this as well. It looks stunning in the light to say the least. This is high quality at its best.
The back shows off all the in the shoulder pads. The combination of blue and black with the shading thrown in is just spectacular to me. This is a resin piece but because of the sculpting, shading and etching it really and truly does look like padded material and spandex. I love how the ice is flowing not only around his arm but up and around his shoulders as well. You can see all the blue and white painting throughout the lice flow. You can also notice all the etching that went into making this look real. You can also see how baggy the pants are, and how they are done to look all wrinkled, and bunched up over the black boots.
This is a shot of the right side. Here you get to see my favorite aspect of the piece. Sub-Zero is getting ready to shoot an ice blast, and you can see how is arm is starting to freeze. Notice how subtle its done. The normal bicep is flesh colored but fades into a blue and white ice color that gets deeper as it hits the forearm cuff. Now the forearm cuff is normally black, but you can see the cold is fading this one out to an almost steel grey. From there the fist itself is pure ice and the ice is smoothly forming at the base of the knuckles. Deep blue to start flowing out into an almost white. I cant get over how much this looks like ice. Hell I was afraid the lighting I use would melt it. Luckily it just made it look brighter and all the more cooler.
The base is cool and unique at the same time. It’s a rock like structure that’s covered in ice. You can see what looks to be a cracked tombstone in a grey color, filled with black shading in the center. Every section of the rock like area is etched and sculpted with cracks and dents. It looks really good. I love the placement of the broken tombstone, or pillar of some sort. The back in behind Sub-Zero, while the broken off top is laying in front. And of course as he is summoning his ice powers the base if being overtaken by ice. Forming around the sides and center and lifting up into the air around his legs this looks awesome. The ice, like in the rest of the statue looks real with the shades of blue and white and it all looks cracked and crystalized. This is a truly great piece, and its sitting on a truly great base.
This is spot on perfect to the game. I mean this is a dead ringer to say the least. Sub-Zero is a great character and this statue does him proud. The adding of the ice from all sides is a great touch and this looks amazing by my sons PS4. If you’re a fan of the games this is a definite must own. Pick one up today.
