Thor Ragnarok: Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against The Incredible Hulk, his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor's quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.
Thor Ragnarok is an amazing film to say the least, action packed, and funny as can be. I could not get over how much I enjoyed it. From top to bottom it was a fun film and one of the best to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it. The scene where Thor must battle Hulk in a gladiator style battle is fantastic. And now Diamond Select Toys is bring that moment to life with their Marvel Milestones Gladiator Thor Resin Statue.
Let me just say up front this thing is massive. I mean massive on entirely other level. It stands over 18 inches tall and is a big wide heavy piece. I had to display it on a table as it was too wide and heavy to place on one of my figure, or book shelves. Look at this You have to build it. Now don’t worry it literally takes about 1minute. You attach the arms, and cape area then insert it in the base. Simple and quick. It just has to come this way do to size, and of course protection of the piece. You can see all the pieces are wrapped in plastic bags and resting in Styrofoam the size of a small briefcase.
Let’s just go right to the head. As you can see this is the perfect image of Chris Hemsworth. From the blue eyes to the scruffy beard this is a great recreation. I think I really like the eyes the best. They are a simple blue and black, but they way they are done, especially with the cheekbones semi flared really stand out. It looks as if it is actually staring at you. The beard is brown with light brown and yellow etched in to give it a dirty scruffy look that as you can see perfectly matches the hair. The helmet is spot on and man does it look bright and bold. Silver with lots of steel blue completely sculpted to match the film version exactly. From the cheek to the tips standing above the head it looks just like the real deal. You can see the red pain above and below Thor’s eye on the right side, which does go down his throat just as in the film. The lines and muscles in his neck and shoulder are visible on the left side where as the right shows where his red cape is attached to his armor. The cape is a more deep red with black shading completely sculpted to look wrinkled and tattered. Its held on by the big deep gold, almost copper colored button on his chest plate. You also get a good shot of the dark grey armor that has the Asian lettering going down the right side, as well as the brown leather strap of his sword holder.
Here is a great look at the shield he used in his battle with the Hulk. It’s the silver colored Sakaaran Shield. Silver that shines in the light with the steel blue tribal markings as well as the flow of red paint. There are various darker colored brown grease markings throughout the piece that have a great real world smeared look about them. I really like how the red and blue used is so bright. It helps to make this part really stand out. Its wrapped around with a brown leather strap and being clutched tightly in Thor’s hand.
On the other side you can see the big silver and red mace Thor is holding. A combination dark and grey silver completely battle worn and scuffed up piece, it very large. This picture does not really do it any justice. It has the bold red bars from top to bottom to do extra damage to opponents. It’s being held with a tight grip in Thor’s left hand, which you can see features those individually sculpted fingers that Diamond Select is know for. You can even see the shading and wrinkles in the palm of the hand. That is attention to detail that is second to none. You can also see the dark brown leather wrist straps
Moving down you get a great look at the armor itself. Dark grey that almost has a leather look they way its presented. Its not battle damaged, just a very smooth style complete with all the tiny silver buttons going throughout the costume where it would be held together. Notice every sticking and seam line it sculpted in and shaded just a tad bit darker to bring it all to life. The red lettering is that bright bold color used to not only match the face pain, but to have it stand out from the red cape. Using two different shades is a nice quality as nothing separate can be confused. I really like the various brown and light black used to create the leather pants and belt. It looks not only like real leather but filthy as well. Don’t get me wrong its bright (to a point) and eye catching but it clearly looks like this outfit has seen better days. If you look in the center of the leg you can see the stich marks going through the pant. Notice all the indents and wrinkles sculpted into the pants, that combined with the shading and of course the gold belt really make this pop. One other thing to point out is Thor’s arm. Not only are all the muscles sculpted to be anatomically correct but even veins have been sculpted into this piece as well. Its just a magnificent piece in every sense of the word.
I love how bright, yet drab the back is. Thor’s tattered cape is amazing. Hanging down yet still almost blowing in the wind as Thor prepares to leap into action. Once again notice all the small etchings and lines throughout all the bends and folds. You can even see the back blow from where the cape is connected. The cape is definitely a huge part of the Thor’s costume and even though this is ripped up it is just spot on. Look at the shoulders where the cape is lifting up with the body. That’s an attention to detail you don’t see very often. I really enjoy how even though it’s a dirty cape with plenty of black used to shade the battle worn areas it’s still fairly bright and eye catching. Another great aspect are the swords strapped onto Thor’s back. Bright deep gold colored handles all with the line work sculpted in being holstered by the bright blue sheaths. The sheaths also have all the line work sculpted into them as well. You get a great view of the bright steel blue in the helmet, and also the fully detailed arm. The muscles sculpted are dead on as far as real muscles go. This is a large impressive piece to say the least.
Moving down to the base you first get a great look at the brown, with black shaded leather boots. Completely crafted to look like the real deal. These are bent and wrinkled in every place real ones would be. You can even see how the soles on the bottom are crafted to look like real boot bottoms. The3 bright blue armor plating on the legs is standing out in full effect as well. The base is a piece of the coliseum that he and Hulk battled in. You can see all the rubble from the various pillars and walls they damaged around the base. Broken pieces of deep and dark grey stones with the blood orange paint flowing throughout. The variations on the paint are incredible. It’s a grey base, that uses different greys for the rubble to make everything blend in, yet still look completely different. It’s a large base, that like I stated earlier is to wide for any shelf I have, hence why it’s on a table.
This is the largest piece I own and I am proud to have it in full view in my office on the table. Now only 1000 of these were made so you better grab one fast. This is a huge, heavy piece that is a must own for any collector and fan. There is a Gladiator Hulk that is actually a bit bigger that you can pair it with. This is, simply put a beautiful piece of art that needs to be displayed. Pick one up today.
