"Weapon X" is a comic book story arc written and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith and published by American company Marvel Comics. The story arc appears in Marvel Comics Presents #72-84 and tells the story of Wolverine during his time in Weapon X. Only the prologue and part of the final chapter are told from the perspective of Wolverine, who is in a near mindless state for the bulk of the story. The series begins with Logan being captured and prepared for the adamantium bonding process. There are several mentions of his being tough, and the Professor, the director of the Weapon X program, along with his assistants Dr. Cornelius and Miss Hines, wipe his mind and bond him to adamantium, the hardest known substance on Earth, to prepare him to be a mindless, soulless killing machine. He eventually escapes into the wilderness after killing all of the soldiers there Weapon X was a very cool, as well as an important storyline. Cool for me as it was done almost like an old school slasher film. Important because we learn how Wolverine was bonded to the adamantium which make up his claws. Turns out in the beginning of his life they were simply bones that he shot out from his knuckles. This experiment turned them into the big silver blades we are accustomed to seeing. As I own a few Wolverine statues I was excited to see that Diamond Select was making one based off this classic story arc. Looking at the head you can see it’s a dead ringer for the comic book. Wearing the classic helmet from the weapon x program, that looks amazing by the way. I mean it is highly detailed. You can see every little mechanical mechanism etched into it. All the cords, the lines, the overlays of metal. It’s all there. Even the now classic (from the cover of the comic) red visor that Wolverine sees through. He trademark sneer this is bad ass from the start. You can see how the sculpting is done in the black section of the helmet by his nose and eyes to give it a frowned pushed in to give the appearance he is squinting under that helmet. That complied with the shading around the area and the faint touch of black around the cheeks really makes the menacing look stand out. If that’s not enough look at that mouth. I love how Diamond Select goes the extra mile and not only sculpts from, but they add almost a deep shaded are to give it the impression that what you are looking at is a mindless killing machine. I also love how you see those big bushy sideburns coming down the cheeks as well as his big hair sticking out of the helmet. Its comic book style as opposed to real world so its etched in but is looks amazing. Before I get to the description of the body you can see the ports inserted into Wolverines chest and abdominal area as well as the cords flowing throughout. Looking at the body you can see what a beast this is. The muscles explode on this thing. No costume like we are used to seeing, no this is just Wolverine in a pair of light black shorts. Nothing else. I really can’t get over how overly muscular it is done. Every muscle in the body is popping out in full effect. From the massive traps to the quads this is a big version of wolverine. The rib cage and ab muscles almost pop out. It’s exactly how he looks in the comics. The pose is fantastic as well as with the claws extended it gives it the appearance he’s ready to stick his claws in someone. Just great all the way around. And let’s not forget all the way they painted, and etched all the body hair into the chest and down the abs. Its really does add a cool touch to it. Throw in all the veins in the arms and this is a very frightening can comic accurate piece. Its also bulky as you can see all the monitors which are fully detailed as well hooked to the left side of Wolverines shorts. And let me also point out how massive his leg muscles are done as well. This side shot gives you a good look at the claws. You can see the veins sticking out especially in wrist area where the arm is drawn back. You can see the three claws coming from the knuckles. They look great. Silver adamantium that’s got a hint of speckled painted inside to really make it shine. The positioning of the arms and claws is the key to this piece and these are done great. The right arm slightly up with the claws out with a tight clenched fist, with the left arm drawn back in a fist also with claws out really capture the aura of Wolverine. The claws are his trademark and these really hit a home run. You can see all of his muscles flexing with the ports attached to his biceps and forearms as well. The fingers are all individually sculpted and just lines with detail. For a comic book style piece this has a ton of realistic elements incorporated into it. The back gives you another look at the muscle structure as it sculpted into a “V” shape. You can see the extension and placing of the legs as well. I love how the right foot is firmly planted down, where the left foot is slightly raised in the back giving the “Ready to pounce” look. There’s a slight bit of black shading done in the back but everything still has that smooth comic book look. They even added hair to Wolverines back which was a great touch. You can also see all of the cords from his leg monitors going up and around connecting to the various ports on his body. Making them green and red was a great touch as it adds color to the piece. You also get a great look at how the calf muscles are popping out. This is a really accurate piece that’s done in that overly muscular comic book style. The base is the snow that Wolverine is walking in. It looks real. White, but not overly bright to make it look like a cartoon, no this is white, grey, and hints of black all complied together to make it look real. I love the shading in spots to give it an iced over look. Notice the footprint in the snow where his barefoot is stepping in. It’s a darker color inside to snow how it would have slightly melted in there. Everything is uneven like a real snowfall. You can see the rocks from the mountain area in full effect to add a bit of depth. Part of it still sticking up from the snow, the other part lying flat with snow covering it up. The snow looks fresh. You can actually picture it snowing when you look at this. There is even hints of snow on Wolverines foot.
This is a great wolverine statue. I loved the Weapon X storyline, it’s always been my favorites. This one really captures the anger and horror of the storyline.
